From what i understand Grizzlies wanted to use JJJ as 5 and it made no sense to keep Valanciunas as back-up. They advanced at the draft to pick a player they wanted, Ziaire Williams, wait and see how he does.

Of course, as it is, Pelicans have won the trade. But it doesn't mean Grizzlies made a stupid move.

Also JJJ has played LESS center than he did last season, we should probably be honest about what this is.

They traded Valenciunas for future assets because they didn't want to pay him, which isn't a terrible idea in theory but the assets they got just weren't good enough.

Every move they made this off season suggests management aren't all in competing but Ja is developing faster than they probably envisioned and he could probably use more help now.

It's not a winter surge, it's the Omicron surge. Not saying the situation couldn't improve by the spring, but this isn't a "normal" surge when the vaccination levels are pretty high.
