Yeah when I said athleticism I was including physical edge in that description too. Platini was a bit of a twink, but his passing, scoring, IQ, and set pieces were all better than Zidane’s.

Just watched some footage again of zizou @Cas. Guy had serious physical strength. There’d be times I thought he would lose the ball but he literally muscles the other guy off the ball, and it’s usually big defenders or defensive midfielders

Before him, France NT was non-existent. In fact, no French players were in top teams around Europe (only allowed two foreigners per team as an FYI and no EU).

I haven't seen much PSG since they lost to Madrid, as Poch's made me lose all faith in this project even though I did enjoy the Messi-Mbappe link up.

Either way, Messi didn't go from the best finisher to the worst just like that. I don't believe he's suddenly forgotten how to shoot the ball. Like yeah, he's been a flop this season as he's heavily underwhelmed relative to expectations, but I don't think it's a simple case of it just being a blatant technical decline.

Once Poch leaves, and they hire a coach who realizes Messi is free at the edge of the box 5-6 times a game, I'm sure his scoring count will increase. His finishing troubles have more to do with confidence and opportunities rather than technique. He went from 6 shots per game to 3 shots per game. Less scoring chances + finishing troubles = a recipe for low confidence and poor form.

It depends. Galtier is giving Messi freedom at the detriment of Mbapay whereas Poch made Mbapay the focus at the detriment of the other two. Had Mbapay been shafted to n9 last season he'd have joined us on a free. Since he was the absolute focus of that team then he was satisifed with his own role within the team. The bubble is bursting slowly this season.

As usual it will all blow up in their faces when QSG get kicked out of CL by the first serious team they meet

What I meant was using the physicality as a means to explaining why he wasn't performing up to his usual standards. It's clearly a more physical league than La Liga, but not especially physical compared to South American wc qualifiers.

Ligue 1 physicality being problem for Messi was bs. The reason for mediocre season were almost career ending injury with no pre-season, long-covid and Poch trifecta. Messi has never had problems in SA, and those games are more physical and far more brutal than Ligue.
