Freeza wrote:Hapless_Hans wrote:I wasn't attacking your list ffs
these are all fine films (except Fight Club of course which is a piece of shit)
Just commenting on the overall focus of most lists both in terms of time and place
It’s all about emotional connections tbh. Most will have newer movies in any of their lists because what time in their lives they watched them and how they made them feel.
I love plenty foreign films from before 1975 etc. They just don’t resonate the same way.
I know at least me and ElG have watched plenty given following each others Letterboxd. So I think our lists being a lot alike is that we’re such a monotonous demographic. We’re all young dudebros really.
Funnily, among the many great Coen brothers movies, and Miller's Crossing might be my favourite, I actually liked Inside Llewelyn Davis very much too, even if it feels like it fell through the cracks of general praise and appreciation somehow.
So what I mean, nothing against your list.

Re: Top 5 Movies
I'd have The Man Who Wasn't There instead of Big Lebowski, somehow I always found their less overtly comedic movies more intriguing and also, funnier
And also, although it's a movie lots of people watch time and time again, I've only seen Big Lebowski once 20 years ago when it was in the cinemas, somehow never revisited it. Guess it's part of my senselessly contrarian streak.
Fargo, Barton Fink, Miller's Crossing I watched numerous times for the simple reason I had them on VHS cassette lol.

Re: Top 5 Movies
It is an assumption that we don't watch foreign or older films though.
Maybe we do but still have newer and American films in our top 5.
I do get refusing to make a top 5. Feeling fidgety for not having Shawshank and Godfather 2 on my list.

Re: Top 5 Movies
think I might have been confused a bit about the idea that this is a 'best 5 films' list more than a 'your top 5 fav' and that's why I made the comment

Re: Top 5 Movies
i didn't like one bit of Miller's Crossing lol
watching movies pre-1970s is a greater mental task for me, i've seen a few, but it's just tough sometimes with my attention span these days, everything about older films just feels different and older lol
the acting
the cinematography
the sound design
everything, even the topics in the films, so i'd much rather just stick to newer stuff that i know i resonate with more

I also like The Pianist and many more. There's just too many of them imo
Ooof great shout with the Pianist, I can see how it would have resonated with you.
I tried to keep my list as versatile as possible because I had Pianist, IG as you mentioned, as well as Schindlers list, Arrival and Contact (1997) on mine but would have been extreme personal bias from my end towards just a couple of subjects imo
Always find myself circling back to The Pianist for some reason, such a beautiful movie. Feels more special than Schindlers List, idk.
Its hard to make this list without any biases

Think I would pick almost every other Polanski movie ahead of The Pianist

Thats why this list can never be without biases. For me, the Pianist feels more special which is why I consider it a better movie.
Depends on what your criteria is, I guess.
Post your top 5 and I'll say none of those would make it into mine top 10. We could go on and on.

Oh absolutely, and not only that, my opinion of a movie might change very much over the years and based on the mindset I had going into watching it, or how many times I've seen it. Film experience is so volatile.
I regard Polanski as one of the very best directors ever so I'm not saying Pianiist is not a good film
It's just that all of Chinatown, The Tenant, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, Vampire Slayers could all easily make a top ten list of greatest films of mine

Life is Beautiful, it's one of my favorite films about WW2
The Pianist, Schindler's List... they are great too
Godfather is my favorite of all time. I'd complete today's top 5 with Lord of the Rings... i select The Two Towers if anything
Only Godfather is a lock tbh

Re: Top 5 Movies
As for films about WWII, I strongly recommend Come and See by Elem Klimov
Amazing film
and I actually wrote a university paper back in the day, on the depiction of the holocaust in Life Is Beautiful

Re: Top 5 Movies
If somebody wants to watch a great but unknown movie from WW2, or rather the jewish solution, Conspiracy 2001 is a great one. It's like 12 Angry Men, mostly everything happens in the same room. It's probably the best movie for TV ever made.

What's your top 3 animated movies all time?
1. The Iron Giant (not even close)
2. WALL-E
3. Into the Spider-Verse
I haven't seen anime films like Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Your Name so can't speak to those.
