I've genuinely never experienced a high like that watching England. The football was shit, the subs were bad, the game was played in a bad spirit, we cheated, they cheated, we had okay moments, they had good moments, we went to penalties, *bleep* up the penalties, them somehow won... what a night.
Right, the serious stuff: Southgate almost blew this with his subs. We couldn't create in open play like I predicted, and Colombia defended our set-pieces really well. Kane gets us a pen for being wrestled in the box yet again in this tournament and we looked okay defending that lead. However, bringing on Dier for Alli made us too deep and defensive. By this point, Lingard had nothing left and it was really showing in his dreadful first touch. We had nobody to take us up the pitch and I really thought Loftus-Cheek would have been a better option. Rashford should have come on instead of Vardy as well, because Vardy is useless unless the ball is playing in behind for him to chase.
The late equaliser destroyed us. Colombia were well in control of the first half of extra-time and should have won it there. That was their chance. We did well to recover our composure and control the second -half, but we still had problems creating anything worthwhile except for Rose's chance.
I didn't like the diving and fouling from us. I don't condone it at all. However, Colombia also spent a good portion of that game grappling in the penalty area, complaining to the ref, and playacting. Tunisia and Panama tried this against us as well and to me it's clear that teams identify this as a weak point for us, given our history in these tournaments. The whole thing seemed to stem from the headbutt on Henderson and our players calling for VAR and crowding the ref - not cool at all from us, don't want to see it even if there was a clear incident worth checking. After that, Colombia clearly wanted revenge. I thought the ref lost control of the game after that.
Absolutely that. Texted my mate as soon as I saw Dier coming on. Worst sub of all time. Last thing we needed was another backpass merchant and he isn't even good at that. And he kept Alli way too long when he looked unfit for most of the match. His loyalty nearly cost us the game.
He should have gone for the kill when he saw how poor Colombia were. But i suppose it was his inexperience at this level.
No harm done in the end. Time to celebrate but we need to improve A LOT.
Football is 3 matches away from coming home.

I genuinely haven't been this happy over any football result in years.
I screamed so loudly my throat still hurts tbh, this is what football is about tbh not the fancy goals or the nice passes but the passion you show for your team that makes you actually cause bodily harm to yourself and others in celebration.
I couldn't scream because my nephews were asleep but I was on my feet for that last penalty. My brother was rocking back and forth biting his nails Best part was the cheers coming from the house across the street.
We don't get these moments that often, so it's worth cherishing.

Yeah the Dier sub was terrible, we can't defend on the backfoot like that at all.
Like i said in future i hope if he wants to make a sub like that, bring Loftus Cheek on as he actually has energy, can carry the ball forward and join attacks.
It's a different way of defending but with this team it's for the best.

Genuinely feel you guys would have had a better time in the 2nd half if it weren't for the fighting. Honestly a tough loss there man, see you for pre-season.

I thought it was a disappointing game for England supporters, for Colombia supporters and for neutrals. At least England got the penalty shootout monkey off their back. But the quality on show today really made this side of the bracket look super-scrappy now.

Tbh i'd be surprised if the next game isn't even more scrappy lol.
It's going to be a game of few chances and we have to hope Kane takes more than Sweden do

Henderson is done lads. This is last major tournament in football at 28, it would be nice if England help him win that.
Ox-Keita-Fabinho is going to be the thang next. Ox is England's best midfielder atm and you can see how he's missed playing a bunch of dabbing *bleep* to link shit up and all they do is link their Twitter accounts on the field and forget to play football.
Anyways it's coming home.

I was thinking about this earlier, considering how we play Oxlade getting injured is a massive miss tbh.

He is. I think the only reason Loftus-Cheek was selected in the end was because of Chamberlain's absence. That ability to carry the ball forward at pace through midfield is valuable.

Look at the time on this story... Matt Lawton had this ready to go as soon as extra time was over...

The big problem with England at the moment is only kane looks like scoring. Sterling and lingard are doing nothing. We need to start the rash ffs.

Re: WC 2018 | Round of 16 | England Vs Colombia
I have some sympathy for Matt Lawton because he would not have written that headline. The sub-editor at the Daily Mail would have glanced over his piece, saw that Sterling was the focus and slapped the most controversial headline he can come up with on it regardless of whether it represented the whole story. And he does that because that's the Mail's MO.
All tabloids care about are eyes on the product and they're happy to tap into people's negative emotions to do so. It stinks. Every newspaper and media outlet in the country will be focusing on a historic win (winning a penalty shootout for the first time at a World Cup), and here we have the Daily Mail, one of the chief participants in the abuse Sterling has received in the press, focusing on his lack of goals. Not just in the middle of an article where it'd be acceptable, but in its headline.
England have done extremely well this year to get the press on their side. They've welcomed them into their training camp, played games with them, talked with them, even forgave them for leaking team news before the Panama game. But there're always a couple of papers who have to ruin it for everyone...

Fair enough Jay, i didn't think about that.
I was so pissed off when i saw it that i reacted instinctively, also in my defence i don't think most of the media deserve the benefit of the doubt tbh.

Re: WC 2018 | Round of 16 | England Vs Colombia
I don't blame you tbh. And in this case, Lawton chose to make Sterling the centre of his match report, which he would have written during the game and sent off to the editor's desk on the full-time whistle. Maybe he didn't intend it to be so sensationalist, but then, he works for the Daily Mail.
There's only thing to focus on from this game: England winning a penalty shootout. Anything else is secondary and would go down much better when things have settled and we're looking ahead to Sweden, not on a night when everyone is celebrating. Lawton should have known better.

I don't know why people would criticise Sterling anyway, from the service he got he was much better than Alli or Lingard and our link up play got significantly worse once he went off.

Henderson has taken one penalty in his entire career, no idea why he accepted to take one at this level.
