Your Name was 2016.
Two more great 2016 anime films went under the radar, In This Corner Of The World and A Silent Voice.

Well, it didn't really get an American release until April 2017. Same with Denmark where I come from. Its eligibility at the Oscars is in question here. Seems like they didn't really have a window or campaign at all, which is just straight neglect.
It actually got a cinematic release in Denmark. So unique for a Japanese Anime.

I read the source material. Had GOAT potential but then fell apart towards the end.
Might watch Mother tonight. Only Korean movie I haven't seen that interests me.
Actually not entirely true, anyone else watched the other movies in the 'vengeance trilogy' besides Oldboy? I heard good things about Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, might watch that. I feel like Korean cinema has declined massively since 2010. All of the classics came in the previous decade IMO.

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
The Shape of Water was also very good. I'm not sure if it was best picture good, and I need some time to reflect, and probably another watch of both of them to determine whether I think I liked Call Me By Your Name better or The Shape Of Water (I'm just talking about oscar noms, I think BR2049 is better than both and I think Wind River is probably right there with the both of them as well in quality, and I also obviously have to see more of the oscar noms like Get Out and Phantom Thread).
I think the quality was similar to Pan's Labyrinth. It's definitely quite a good film, very beautiful, and I think best director was earned by del Toro for a wonderfully directed film. I did think the story...honestly could have probably been better, but it didn't hurt the film much (the fact it is as fantastical as it is saves it a bit here). Michael Shannon is fantastic, Sally Hawkins does a beautiful job, and Octavia Spencer is OK, I'm not really sure why she got a best supporting actress nod, she didn't do very much.
Anyhow, while it was very good, I must say that if this is winning best picture, it has been a bit of a weak set of films that have been nominated for Oscars. That's not to say I haven't really enjoyed CMBYN or Lady Bird though, which I think were both legitimately great films in addition to The Shape of Water.
That being said, I think it's fairly middle of the road when it comes to best pic winners. It's certainly better than The King's Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, Argo, and The Artist. Probably better than Birdman and on a similar level to Spotlight and Moonlight. Both Arrival and La La Land blow it out of the water though, pun intended. However, both those films got shafted so the academy can *bleep* off. In retrospect, looking at some of the films I've named, I take it back, it's a bit better than middle tier for sure. There have been some painfully average best picture winners over the years.

I quite enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire. It was different.
Other than that, I mostly agree with what you said.

To be fair, out of those I said the shape of water was better than, I do think Slumdog Millionaire tops them (better than kings speech, the artist, argo)

The Handmaiden and The Wailing are recent good ones. You watched those?

Yeah I mentioned I saw The Wailing. Handmaiden kinda put me off due to me generally not being a fan of period pieces. For some reason I find it hard to get immersed. Might watch it though if you say it's legit.

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
lol was looking at that as premise looked alright
straight to netflix movies aren't doing too well
@Freeza why do you think this is
people involved half-assing it because Netflix will greenlight anything and they see it was less prestigious? Too much control for a few people involved in the project? with studio movies you often have to go through like 40 people who want to meddle with the final cut etc

Well, it's not Netflix original. It's just straight to Netflix in Europe, which is good for us since it only released a month ago in US theaters IIRC.

Nah. Not for a while as far as I know, not 100% sure but I saw people complain about that. It has a theatrical release over there. But you can always just watch it online.

It’s like that for a whole lot of production companies, but no one pays attention to straight to dvd in wall mart and iTunes etc.
There’s plenty good originals considering how new their movie initiative is. They had multiple Oscar nominations and a win this year.
