Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed the Jamaican striker Leon Bailey with immediate effect. The 19-year-old joins the club from Belgian Europa League participants KRC Genk on a five-year contract to 2022.

"In Leon Bailey we have brought in another highly promising player on a long-term deal," declared Bayer 04 CEO Michael Schade. "This lad was also high up on the wish list of many other European clubs. That makes as even happier to have won out against such strong competition."

Sporting director Rudi Völler believes Bailey, who is entitled to play in the Champions League in spite of Europa League appearances for Genk, fits in perfectly with the Werkself system. "He's an unusually quick, very tricky player who will give our attack an additional boost. We are sure Leon Bailey will be a big hit for us."

The player is very happy to wear the Werkself shirt. “Bayer 04 are a good club. I’d like to take my next important step here. Leverkusen are well known as a club where you can really develop. And the way they play football is attractive. I like that,” said Leon Bailey who will wear the number nine shirt this season.

According to kicker, the fee is 12m €, as opposed to the 11m he would have costed Bayer next summer (Bayer originally had planned the transfer for next summer, bit in the meantime Bailey got into a fight with Genk and his agent/stepdad worked for an immediate transfer).
Due to addons the fee can rise to 15m altogether, with Genk also getting a percentage of any future sale profit.

For anyone wondering about the player, I've been following for a long time. :coffee:

Sainsbury was born in Perth and played youth football with Perth Glory and the Australian Institute of Sport Football Program before starting his professional career with Central Coast Mariners. Sainsbury moved to PEC Zwolle in 2014.

Sainsbury has made twenty-one appearances for the Australian national team, scoring once. He was a member of the Australia team which won the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Edit: seems like it's only a loan deal to cover Ranocchia's "loss". Guy plays in China for Jiangsu Suning. Huge LOL at Inter starting their new chinese era with some traveler whose biggest club been PEC Zwolle.

As the resident A-league watcher, I can say that Trent is a defender from Australia.
