this whole captain thing is so overrated.
the team doesn't look at one player for leadership
professionals are not 5 year olds who need to be influenced to do their job that they get overpaid for.

How can you with a straight face say that Puyol as a captain had no influence on the barca players in the past?

Captains can be important, but if your club/country has natural leaders on the pitch then it doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things.

Say you have a couple of experienced, level headed players and some flamboyant, annoying scrub as a captain. The experienced players won't give two shits what their captain is doing, and will help the team out regardless.

Because clearly Donuts forgot what it is to play a team sport which I am pretty sure he did. The captain's role is incredibly important and it is not something overrated or over hyped. Even professionals need to find inspiration from someone they can actually relate i.e their teammates. As much as one may think, these guys are human beings.

It becomes incredibly water down when it is use as some marketing or even a political tool which I believe is the case here.

i said overrated not useless.
of course guiding your teammates and keeping a good attitude is HELPFUL but not as much as you guys are making it out to be.
a player like messi or suarez do not need a puyol in their team to be who they are.. your giving so little credit to players for that

also i wish the whole armband crap would be done and over with, that's more of a visual for the fans than the actual team itself.

Captaincy is important, the manager can't always be telling the players what to do, it's good that someone has "official" authority within the squad to speak up and lead them. However, it's totally retarded that most often the best or the longest-serving player is made captain instead of the best leader. Neymar shouldn't be a captain, Suarez was the captain in some games at Liverpool and that wasn't smart, imo, Man City made Tevez the captain, he couldn't even properly speak the language of the country.

Anyway, a little harsh punishment on Neymar. Then again, it's only Copa America :coffee:

The captaincy issue is a never ending topic. For me, it's only a symbol and doesn't mean much. I mean, how does Iniesta influence his teammates? He wears the armband, but he seems rather quiet and introverted. I think Pique is the leader of the current team and he doesn't need a freaking piece of material for that.

Neymar is young and still kinda stupid. I expected the bubble to burst when he will be facing Zuniga again but he let his teammates down as he can't feature anymore.

I'm not complaining though, he can have longer holidays and return to Barca earlier.

Naymer's behaviour was childish and was served right. Being a captain means something and he need to get things straight. No matter how good player you are , captaining a team is a different ballgame altogether.

Hope he learned few things from this incident. Brazil is out it seems , damn... the only team i was following. :coffee:

Don't count those eggs before they hatch. A draw gets Brazil through to the knockout stages. Maybe even a 1 goal defeat.

If brazil gets to the knockout stages I expect Dunga to carry them through. He's won a cola America with a similar squad in 2017.

Exactly that was my point. You can't really choose the class clown as captain, especially when he gets sent off for stupidity and thus doesn't exactly lead by example - unless you consider it the example as to how to get back to your club as fast as possible. ^^

Captaincy is overrated. No one really cares who wears the armband. You give someone like Neymar the armband, but players will still look at TS for leadership because of his personality and because Neymar is still a kid. I think the press makes too much of this issue.
