A very good round for us. West Ham and Swansea did draw and Tottenham lost and ManU and Southampton will face each other today.

HEIL MEIN REDS wrote:well the reason i said we will be 5th is not because our opposition wont drop points, I think we are equally equipped to drop points against the likes of Sunderland and Villa away games
Also the fact is, if Arsenal gain 7 points from those game and we gain 12 points, we would still be on equal points with them. So I think for me a very optimistic situation will be going 5th by end of Jan.
will it happen I doubt !!

Re: Rival Thread: 2014-15
Big week this one for us, whenever we manage to get on a positive note we some how manage to *bleep* it up. Fixtures aren't on our side this week, but it's weeks like this we need to overcome to keep up with the pace.
Villa haven't always been the easiest of teams for us and considering it's away we have a tough fixture ahead. United, Southampton, Spurs and West ham should all win, potentially Newcastle can get something from Southampton, but no Pardew no party . Arsenal should by all means lose but you never know, i can definitely see a draw here, but city will be hungry for a win after a disappointing draw against Everton.
We need to win this week to stay within arms reach of the remaining 2 top 4 places, if we drop points it's another case of 1 step forward 2 steps back.
02:00 Aston Villa ? - ? Liverpool
02:00 Burnley ? - ? Crystal Palace
02:00 Leicester City ? - ? Stoke City
02:00 Queens Park Rangers ? - ? Manchester United
02:00 Swansea City ? - ? Chelsea
02:00 Tottenham Hotspur ? - ? Sunderland
04:30 Newcastle United ? - ? Southampton
January 19
00:30 West Ham United ? - ? Hull City
03:00 Manchester City ? - ? Arsenal

Imagine spending 170m on the team, being the best manager in the world ever, and having the same amount of points after 21 games as Moyes though

Imagine spending 100m+ on the team, being the best manager in the world ever, and having lost 10 points after the same 21 games though
In fact, he's spent 200m+ since he's being here, and had more points in his FIRST season at the club.
First season:
21 games 34 points
42 goals scored, 30 conceded
Second season:
21 games, 42 points
51 goals scored, 26 conceded
Third season:
21 games 32 points
29 goals scored, 27 conceded

I know Brendans record this season has been poor. I think it would be miracle if we finish top 4, it is never easy to go ahead of teams above you, at this stage of the season.

A 3-4 continous win streak and we're back in the mix proper. Its not over until the 31st game and if we're within 5 points that time.

Brendan got us closer to a PL title in his second year than Rafa got in 6 years here.
FACT.
Can't wait until we win a trophy or two this season and finish in top 4, only to see you becoming a Spain NT fan because of Rafa

We were 8 points off top tis time last season, and every single one of you mocked me for creating that "going for title" thread before the Arsenal game.
It's hard. but it's do-able.
we lost FIFTY league goals. hopefully at least 10/15 of them are coming back this next week. our summer signings are starting to settle in new formation, and history has shown we always do better at BR's second alves of seasons.
I'm not saying we're guaranteed top 4 spot or anything...but it wouldn't be a "MIRACLE".
3 weeks ago, we were 10 points off Man U. Now the gap is cut to half. with 17 games to go.

mate, I have been saying from the start of the season that our priority should be 'to finish top 4'. So I had always thought that it would be difficult to carry the last season's form. You know that I am neither negative nor too optimistic. You also know very well that that an amazing run when we had both Suarez and Sturridge firing on all cylinders, took us near the top. So I think we need some sort of strong run of form again to reduce the gap.
Also my judgement is based on that I am not expecting all three of Southampton, Arsenal and ManUtd to drop so many points to let us get into top 4. I think we really need great luck that both of the following to happen 'we go on a strong run' and 'the rivals drop enough points'. I think it is extremely difficult that both will go in our favour. My opinion is, even if Sturridge remains fit for all of the season, the H2H matches will decide our future and we will probably finish in top 4 (by a small margin, may be like 1 point) or we will miss top 4 (by 2 points). That too Sturridge remaining fit. So I think even after Sturridge remaining fit for the whole season, will just make it extremely competitive. That is why I would hyperbole it and call it a miracle, if after such a terrible start we still manage to finish in top 4.

Team in 08/09 finished with 86 points, scoring 77 conceding 27 [compared to 82 points, scoring 102, conceding 48 was it?]. In a tougher league. 3 teams made it to the semis of the CL that year. Liverpool being one of them. With some what less depth. Oh, and we were considered the best team in Europe, FACT.
Can't wait until his sacked to get your real thoughts on this whole ordeal. We went from Suarez and Sturridge to Sterling and shit.

So what you are saying is that Benitez failed to win a single trophy, or the league, with the best team in Europe? So, despite having better players and more time with his team he failed to do better than Rodgers? Hmm...
I would like to see what Rodgers could do if he had the best team in Europe.
I mean look at the difference in quality in the players that Benitez got to manage in just that season versus Rodgers: Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Carragher, Agger, Reina, Kuyt, etc. all in their primes.

You're right.
Rafa went "trophyless". What a flop. Terrible, just terrible.
Rodgers though, what a man.
Also, are you kidding me? Like. Seriously. Are you really arguing the point that Rafa had THOSE players? The players HE bought. With limited funds, by the way. 3 years later with your love child, who exactly do we have? We've been carried by a 20 year old kid for most of the season ffs. And he's actually been BACKED by the manager.

We haven't been carried by anyone. The season has had a rough start as players adapt to losing two of the best players we had from last season, and playing with a lot of new teammates.
With that said I'm not saying that Rafa didn't do well to get most of those players, but if you want to compare what Rafa had to work with versus what Rodgers has had to work with it's a completely different situation. On top of which Benitez wasn't dealing with a transfer committee (limited funds or not). Also there are a number of players that Rodgers has bought that look like they will become class, or are already showing their ability. Keep in mind the season that you were talking about was not the first season in Liverpool for all of those players -- this is Rodgers' first season with the players he bought.
