Help a Newbie Yank Empty Help a Newbie Yank

Post by BigNewFan Wed Apr 23, 2014 2:43 pm

Guys, I've googled my ass off and still can't find the answer. It's a simple question, really.

I watched yesterday's semi-final between Chelsea vs Atletico. I thought the winner of that match (I was surprised it ended in a draw and not PKs) was to play the winner of Bayern/ Madrid for the final CL trophy.

Can someone explain how many matches are left between these four teams?

Help a newbie yank out.

Thanks

Knockout games in the Champions League other than the final itself involve home and away legs. So there's one game left between Chelsea and Atetico - and two left between Madrid and Bayern.

You googled your ass off and still can't find the answer?

Each tie is over two games, so there will be a second game at Chelsea.
The final then is only one game.

The CL semi final matches are played as 2-legged affair with a match at home and away each.

So Chelsea will host Atlético and then the winner will be determined who will proceed to the final.

Bayern will play in Madrid today and the 2nd leg will be in München, so in that case there are still 2 matches to determine who will proceed to the final.

And in May, the final of the CL will be played as one single match in the neutral venue of Lissabon, which was chosen about 2 years ago, IIRC.

he didn't ask. And given his problems with googling, we thought it's better to start with the basics hmm

But here you go:

The ties are over two legs. Each team plays home and away once. After both games the winner on aggregate (sum of results) progresses.
If the aggregate is a draw however, the 'away goal rule' takes effect: then the team progresses which scored more goals away from home.
Only if both results have been exactly the same there's extra time at the end of the second leg, and if it's still the same after extra time, there's penalties.
