Given the away goal rule, surely it would be better to leave Madrid with a 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, whatever than a 0-0? As it stands any score draw in London sees Atleti through... Hell, if Chelsea think they can take it 1-0 at home then even a 2-1 to Atleti today would have worked out for them just as well as a 0-0.
0-0 on paper is not a good result, but considering the Chelsea conditions today , the injuries before and during the match .. it was definitely the better obtainable result . And not, 2-1 is not same thing han 0-0 . also because on paper you could draw another match for 0-0 and going at extra time.
anyway I see Atletico Madrid favorite to get the qualification , and not only for this result.

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
Injuries before the match? Hazard and...? Eto'o has scored how many goals away from Stamford Bridge this season?
And the injuries during the match mean little when Chelsea's tactics were set from minute 1 and never even looked like changing.
If anything, Chelsea should arguably have pushed for a goal once they saw key defensive players go down injured... if they miss the second leg it becomes that much more likely that away goals could matter. Add to that that Chelsea should expect to be able to score at home with returning attacking players and it becomes EVEN MORE weighted in favour of looking for goals rather than defending the 0-0. Given Chelsea's squad and available players there's absolutely no reason that a score draw or victory should have been viewed as anything other than an "obtainable result" even with a pair of injuries prior to the match.
- Hint:
- It's less than 1.

As I said, I didn't like the result. Wasn't a bad result but it wasn't really a good result either. I wanted a score draw.RedOranje wrote:I have a question for those suggesting that this result is good for Chelsea: How is a 0-0 better for Chelsea than a score draw?

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
I don't know the statistics of Eto'o but he is best Chelsea CF , that's enough.
Anyway although the 0-0 is an unsafe result, who has really regrets for this match are the Colchoneros more than the Blues. There is a reason I suppose

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
Chelsea fans defending this shit on a stick football against bloody Atleti. Nobody and I repeat Nobody plays ptb against them. Heck Barca played TWO defenders and Atleti only scored one goal in two legs. They struggle to get out of their own half when you throw all your attackers on them and resort to hoofing to Garcia standing by your LB. If you win the second ball you have effectively nullified them.
Ramires playing as an extra RB and Willian as an extra LB you'd think they were West ham out there with their "19th century" football
brb trying to graft back the 95 minutes of my life that I lost watching this dreadful game.

Goddness gracious me. But imo Atleti should have taken more risks. Such as playing Courtois as a striker or Miranda as an AM

Well, I watched GoT parallel to the first half. Whenever I looked to the TV with Chelsea, I wasn't sure it wasn't a better depiction of the Wall in the north...

It was the worst game of football in major tournament since Paraguay - Japan Last 16 match in 2010 World Cup. It was even worse than that game.

yes you are not ashamed of playing most horrid, boring, negative and pathetic football of 17th century but we should be definitely ashamed if we dont thrash you and your manager moans about West Ham bah Gawd my love keeps on growing for you guys.Blue Barrett wrote:Tbf, if you don't "destroy us" with Cech and JT out and Hazard possibly out, you should be ashamed of yourselves.Natalie Portman wrote:RealGunner wrote:Jose Mourinho: "My priority is Champions League."
Chelsea play Liverpool and Atletico just 3 days apart (Sun, Wed).
Already getting his excuses ready for when we destroy them. He thinks he is smart, but he aint
On topic, if Atleti get the first goal in the return leg, they will definitely go through

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
Mourinho parked a submarine infront of a Boeing aircraft, infront of a tank, infront of an armored Hummer, infront of a bus, infront of his hatchback car, infront of Jose Jr's tricycle......... all this to ward of the famed attacking force that is Atleti
All hail the Special One!!!!!
That being said, I'm even more intrigued to watch the second leg. With his almost thread bare defensive resources now, surely his team will have to attack early and decisively to have any hope of winning this tie. Kind of like the Inter vs Barcelona game at San Siro

As boring as Mous style is, and as bad as it is for neutrals. I'd be absolutely downright lying if I said I wouldn't do something similar if it brought my club results

Mourinho 2004 on "parking the bus"
LOL
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/3665180.stmChelsea manager Jose Mourinho criticised Tottenham for their approach after the two clubs drew 0-0.
He said: "As we say in Portugal, they brought the bus and they left the bus in front of the goal.
"I would have been frustrated if I had been a supporter who paid £50 to watch this game because Spurs came to defend.
"I'm really frustrated because there was only one team looking to win, they only came not to concede - it's not fair for the football we played.

I don't really mind him PTB, he can play however wants if it's getting him the results. I'm open to teams playing however they want. Just as long as my team isn't PTB.

I am not defending this drub football but surely I have to point out the conflicting opinions

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
We're just not a club who PTB and defend, it's always been about attacking. Our fans just won't accept it. Secondly we don't have the players for it either. The minute we attempt it, Pepe/Ramos will get impatient and concede a pen. Also finally the biggest club ever should not be synonymous with an underdog style of play.

I thought you meant it personal rather than thinking of the club you support, its philosophy and players.

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
I was wrong, the tension of the game and the intrest in the tactical battle will make it an intresting game despite the style of the two teams. Most definitely wrong.
However, I did not anticipate Chelsea playing 5 defenders and 2 defensive minded midfield players..holy hell.

Re: Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea - First Leg
As boring as it was Chelsea did manage to expose Atleti's rather simplistic offensive style.
But honestly I will never understand Mou's approach to the first leg of a tie that is played away from home. He has always maintained that he only seeks to avoid defeat in the first leg be it at home or away. I disagree completely with that.
If you are away from home you should be trying to score as many away goals as possible even if it means you lose the game. I'd take a 4-3 loss over a low scoring affair away from home. Knowing that I'll have the away goal advantage in the second leg.
If the first leg were at Stamford Bridge I would say that this result was perfect for Chelsea but as it stands any scoring draw sees Atleti through and a scoring draw is strong possibility considering the style of both teams.

Mou's approach away from home is logical only because he is a king at home. Had a undefeated record at home + generally for him home is a big advantage.
Just plays to his strenghts although I think he overdoes it. There are certainly moments where he could attack away from home.
