2014 Algarve Cup
The Algarve Cup is an annual invitation tournament that features 12 Women NTs. Among them usually are the strongest women football nations of the world, hence it is also called the "Mini World Cup". It is held yearly since 1994 and it is the most prestigious women football tournament after the World Cup, Euros and Olympics.
So far the record champions are the US Ladies with 9 wins, and they are the current holders, too, after they defeated the German NT 2:0 in the Algarve Cup 2013.
This year's Algarve Cup takes place from 5 March 2014 to 12 March 2014 in several locations in the Algarve, Portugal. The participants this year are:
Group A: China, Germany, Iceland, Norway
Group B: Denmark, Japan, Sweden, USA
Group C: Austria, North Korea, Portugal, Russia
Matches so far:
5 Mar 2014
Norway 0:1 China
Germany 5:0 Iceland
Japan 1:1 USA
Sweden 2:0 Denmark
Russia North 1:2 Korea
Austria 2:3 Portugal
7 Mar 2014
Norway 1:2 Iceland
Germany 1:0 China
Japan 1:0 Denmark
Sweden 1:0 USA
North Korea 2:0 Austria
Portugal 1:3 Russia
The remaining group matches will be played on 10 Mar 2014; the final and placement matches will be played on 12 Mar 2014. Only Group A and Group B will play for the Cup, while Group C (which consists of comparatively weak teams) will play placement matches against the 4th placed teams of Group A and B.
