22nd Algarve Cup 2015

The Algarve Cup is an annual invitation tournament that features 12 Women NTs. Among them are the strongest women football nations of the world, hence it is also called the "Mini World Cup". It is held yearly since 1994 and it is the most prestigious women football tournament after the World Cup, Euros and Olympics.

So far the record champions are the US Ladies with 9 wins. The current holders are Germany who defeated Japan 3:0 in the Algarve Cup 2014.

This year's Algarve Cup takes place from 4 March 2015 to 12 March 2015 in several locations in the Algarve, Portugal. The participants this year are:

Group A: Brazil, China PR, Germany, Sweden
Group B: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, USA
Group C: Denmark, France, Japan, Portugal

The group matches will be played from 4 Mar to 9 Mar 2015; the final and placement matches will be played on 11 Mar 2014. This year the final will be played between the best group winners out of the three groups.

So Portugal organizes this tournament (since it's held in Portugal every year). How good are the Portuguese team?

The Portuguese Women NT has still some space for improvement. Their best FIFA rank so far was 32, and they have yet to qualify für either Euro, World Cup or Olympic Games.

Yes I assumed as much. But I'm really puzzled. Don't you think a nation/FA organizing such a great competition for 22 years would automatically lead to great improvement to their own squad?

It depends. You need to have the league infrastructure to nurture good talent, too.

I have no idea how the acceptance of women football is in Portugal, but it seems that women football in general faces some problems in the South European countries (neither Italy nor Spain have women teams that could match the success of their men's teams either). Interestingly, the culture in England is pretty hostile to women football, too, even though they have some pretty good club teams like the Arsenal Ladies.

The big women football nations are the USA and the Northern European countries (Scandinavia have very good women teams) plus Germany, China and Japan. Brazil have the probably best female player in Marta, but their NT lags a bit behind expectations.

So, here are the first results of the group stage:

FT - Japan 1:2 Denmark

First match and first surprise when Denmark defeated the current World Champion Japan.

FT - Germany 2:4 Sweden

Goals:
02.) 1:0 - Dzsenifer Marozsan
03.) 2:0 - Simone Laudehr
30.) 2:1 - Caroline Seger
54.) 2:2 - Sofia Jakobsson
71.) 2:3 - Caroline Seger
84.) 2:4 - Sofia Jakobsson

Second match, second surprise. Germany started with two lightning fast goals, but Sweden weren't impressed and replied with four goals to turn the match around.
Note: Germany are currently missing 8 important players due to injuries, among them 2014 Golden Ball winner Nadine Keßler. Similarly, the Swedes miss their star player Lotta Schelin.

FT - Brazil 0:0 China PR
FT - Switzerland 2:0 Iceland
FT - Norway 1:2 USA
FT - Portugal 0:1 France
