The BBC set up an interactive table where they counted all World cup matches since 1930 just as if they would have played in a league (win 3 points, draw 1 point, loss 0 points, plus goal difference). Here you can check the result:

Between the Raymond Koppa/Fontaine/etc. years in the 50s and the Platini era starting in the late 70s, France NT was absolutely putrid. I don't think we qualified for anything at all during that period lol.

Our success is mostly in the last 45 years.
