Homegrown starters Empty Homegrown starters

Post by eelir Tue Nov 12, 2013 7:50 pm

The figures below show the average number of homegrown starter players per match for different clubs and leagues.

The most trusting to their youth (in the ascending order) are Spanish, French and German teams followed by English teams while Italians are at the bottom. They have 6 teams that have not started a homegrown player yet.

The number in the brackets shows the current standing in the league table.
BTW forgive the team spelling, i took the list from Serbian web site so some team names can be weird. I changed some of them.

Still yet to hear a valid reason as to why Manchester City blew a fortune upgrading their youth academy

Anyone has a list of those "home grown" (I think it's ridiculous to call some homegrown who was bought for big money at the age of 17 oder even 18) players?

Nothing wrong with not having homegrown in the starting 11.

Inter is killing the "growing" part, not so much the "keeping" or "playing" parts Laughing

Do you have the definition of "homegrown" according to that list? Players from the club's academy, but how long did they have to attend that academy to count as homegrown? 3 years? 5 years? Any other length of time?

Those who have played at least three seasons between the ages of 15-21 for the club in question.

DAT's because we're stealing their biggest talents when they are like 12. Recently Gerard Nolla, Juan Rojas, Toni Caravaca, Tandasi ... Adrian Bernabe the biggest talent of them all.

Nothing was mentioned in the article about the definition of home grown, and actually they refer to the figures as the players from youth academy.

In any ways I think it is amazing how much spanish teams in general rely on youth academies compared to the rest of the leagues. Could that be the indicator why their NT is packed with great players?

Well, in Germany you have the problem that the best youth academy products of smaller clubs are taken away by bigger clubs - so you have quite a lot of young German players around who still don't count as homegrown if you go for the "from a club's own academy" criterion and so the data might be somewhat skewed if you look at it from the native-to-the-county players perspective.

The definition is in the diagram: a player who has played at the club for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

So by that definition, the figures would include players that aren't of the club's nationality or even from their academy. At Arsenal, for example, our home grown players are Szczesny, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Wilshere, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott and Bendtner, yet only two have been produced by the club (Gibbs and Wilshere) while the others were signed from else where.

Southampton are actually more impressive when it comes to this, since Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Adam Lallana came from their own academy, and they produced Chamberlain and Walcott.
