Vieira was definitely better.
Funny thing is, two years ago or even one I bet people would've tried to say Busquets is better. I hope people have finally come to their senses and realize that hes average for a big club (a bit above average in general), but really nothing special.

Viera is better but Busquets is not average, he's a world class player.

this how see the type of defensive midfielder's
deep technique playmaker use more they brain than physical side
sit in front of back 4 use more pace, power,physical side then use brain
mobile destroyer, get from box to box, use power pace,,physical & win the ball as fast as he can get to the attacking players
if look for like for like

this how see the type of defensive midfielder's

Alonso is better at distributing the ball but is a horrible defender. He is absolutely terrible and makes a shocking tackle every game because he gets turned. Busquets is far better at anticipating danger and is better defensively as well. Bad comparison.
More like Alonso vs Pirlo, but Pirlo is better at everything.

well at Liverpool,
Alonso would sit in front of back 4, beak any attack, & cover the full backs,
Mascherano played in front of Alonso as mobile destroyer, get ball as fast to Gerrard & co
as for Real Sociedad i don't the role he player there

But that's the thing though, he isn't a true DM and because of that he has always needed a true destroyer by his side to help him out...

Viera was not a DM? Really? Sigh, that certainly changes things for me. Truthfully, he was in the same mold as the likes of Mauro Silva: A midfield pivot (I think).
But yeah, Viera was the better footballer. No shame in that.

I think Busquets is great and his anticipation, tackling and passing skills played a major part in Spain's and Barcelona's success, but Vieira was better - great defensive skills, good dribbling, better vision, great header of the ball, decent shot.

His best 3 partners in midfield where Petit, Gilberto and Makelele. Actual holding players which allowed Viera the freedom his talent demanded.
