He is solid defencively, that is for sure, Stick a DM next to him and I will be more than happy.

I'll try hunt down some decent videos of him for everyone to enjoy.

One thing that's really good is that he's well built, I know you can be a slight player and still make it but adding a bit of physicality is always good.

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Marco van Ginkel today (Friday) completed his transfer from Vitesse Arnhem.

The Dutch international midfielder signed a five-year contract, and said: 'I'm very happy to be here at such a nice club with great players. I am really happy, the stadium is good and the training ground is fantastic.

'I know about all the players and will meet them on Monday. I expect a lot, I've watched matches and it's really nice to be here.'

Chelsea will be the second professional club of Van Ginkel's career, the 20-year-old having come through the youth system at Vitesse Arnhem before making his debut in the Dutch top flight near the end of the 2009/10 season, aged 17.

He played his first full international for the Netherlands in November and represented his country at the European Under-21 Championships in Israel last month.

He was named Dutch Talent of the Year for last season, awarded to the best young player, joining a list which includes former Chelsea players Arjen Robben, Salomon Kalou and Boudewijn Zenden.

By all accounts RLC seems to be Mikel's eventual replacement.

Unlike the other talents we've been producing he's BOTH physically and technically gifted.

Might get a couple of games this year.

Great signing tbh.. I prefer him over De Rossi (due to age mainly).. Definitely one that will amazingly maintain Chelsea's position in the future.

All that I've read about Ginkel is positive in terms of attack and defensive play. But his one shortcoming is that he's not a true destroyer like Makelele or Essien were at their primes.. However, his defensive positioning and intelligence is unquestionably great. Perhaps like a Xabi Alonso type of defender (who is a solid DM as well as a DLP to be fair).

But I honestly don't mind Ginkel not being a "true destroyer".. I think his other abilities more than make up for that..

Edit: Oh and as Kick as already mentioned.. Ginkel isn't a DLP like Xabi Alonso / Pirlo either.. But we can more than make do with what we have Smile

Mate, he's not being brought in as a DLP or Destroyer, he's being brought in to take Lampsy's spot next to a destroyer which will be Mikel or a new CM.

He's a great talent but he is never going to be the more defensive player in the pivot, unless he gets Ramires like Stamina and improves his defending.
