Moyes Watch
Everton boss David Moyes is set to be appointed as the new Manchester United manager, following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
An announcement could be made on Thursday.
Ferguson, 71, revealed his decision to step down after nearly 27 years at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Fellow Scot Moyes, 50, who has been in charge at Goodison Park since 2002, held talks with Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright on Wednesday evening.
Moyes is expected to tell the Everton players and staff of his decision to join United at a training ground meeting on Thursday morning.
He could still lead Everton out at Goodison Park against West Ham on Sunday for what would be his final home game in charge.
The former Preston boss was installed as bookmakers' favourite to become the next United boss following a rush of bets over the weekend, even before speculation mounted about Ferguson's retirement. "He's cut from the same cloth," said former United captain Steve Bruce.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he got the job and I'm sure he would be very successful. "He's not had huge finances but he has still managed to put an Everton team together that comfortably finishes in the top 10."
Former United assistant manager Steve McClaren also believes Moyes is the right man for the job.
"He's a winner and has a work ethic similar to Sir Alex," the ex-England manager told BBC Radio 5 live. "He's also built a dynasty and legacy at Everton."He's waited many years for this opportunity and I hope he gets it."
Former England striker Gary Lineker, who presents the BBC's Match of the Day programme, said Moyes would be a "sensible" appointment.
"It is a great choice for United, but not a great choice for Everton because he will be a great loss to them. It makes the transition easier to get another British and Scottish manager in," said the ex-Toffees forward.
"He (Moyes) is hugely respected within the game and he will instantly get the respect of the players but it's the biggest pair of shoes you can follow. It's intensely difficult and I think the best job at Manchester United is the one after the one after Sir Alex Ferguson because expectations will be so tough.
"It is going to be extraordinarily difficult for the next boss of Manchester United because if it goes wrong the fans will let him know they are missing Sir Alex.

Re: Moyes Watch
I think Moyes is a good choice. They maybe could have done better, but they certainly could have done much MUCH worse in an attempt to fill Fergie's boots.
I think he will do well, but there should definitely be some growing pains in loosing SAF and most likely Rooney.
Next season is going to be crazy

Re: Moyes Watch
Amazes me how overrated Moyes is.
Wenger qualifies for the CL every year on a shoestring budget.
AVB won a treble in his very first season at only 33.
Klopp won back to back titles and is set for a CL final.
Laudrup won the LC in his very first season at Swansea.
Pellegrini did wonders at Villarreal.
Fergie won 3 of Arbedeen's 4 League titles and a European Championship.
Mourinho won a treble in his first season at Porto and then the CL the next year.
Don't get me wrong he's no MON or Arry. But there's no guarantee he's going to be a success either.
He's no better than Rodgers or Di Matteo at this moment in time.

Are you calling Rodgers in the same breath as Di Matteo?Gil wrote:Amazes me how overrated Moyes is.

I agree with you anyways. People calling him underrated has led to him becoming overrated massively. Now that he's joined United, I expect that hype to reach greater limits.
Frankly speaking, 'Arry and MON have been better than him.

Rare that I agree with Gil but I do on this. Moyes has done a good job at Everton but hasn't achieved anything spectacular. Constant finishes around 5th-8th is good for a club with such a small budget and all but he's only got the CL once and then he got knocked out in the qualifiers, even Newcastle almost got there last season and even in the Europa League he's never done well. Good manager but not good enough for the biggest job in England or to fill the boots of one of, if not the best managers ever.
He might prove me wrong I just think there are better options out there.

For one, back when he was newly appointed, he was talking about making the club a formidable team in the Premier League. The next season, Everton finished 17th.

Lets see.... has a weaker squad, less resources and a inferior starting eleven and still manages to find himself above Rodgers Liverpool all season long
What else does he need to do?

and Pardew was above AVB all season last year
Moyes bottled Everton's best chanceo f top 4 in a long time with his negativity earlier in the season when they drew 9 games outta 11. consistently throwing away leads

Moyes consistently does it though, Pardew's was a fluke so its hardly a fair comparison.

Re: Moyes Watch
He has been at the club since a long time and knows the squad's strengths and weaknesses. Using the club's league position as the basis for determining a manager's abilities is flawed logic. Newcastle finished above Everton last season.. clearly Pardew is a better than Moyes going by this trend.
Same thing is applicable to Arsenal. They have an experienced manager who is well-versed with the club's happenings and this helps the club to finish in top 4 every season constantly. When the manager is acquainted with his club, results are obviously going to be better and consistent.
A better position to judge Moyes and Rodgers will be when the latter has been at the club for 3-4 years.

I agree with this, but for now he shouldn't even be compared to Moyes.
Moyes took a team about to be relegated to a consistent top 6 team and in to Europe a few times.
Rodgers is a rookie as of right now and hasn't achieved anything substantial.
At least Di Matteo has won trophies, to put Rodgers in the same breath as Moyes is ridiculous.
Same idiots who say Martinez is better than Moyes.... why? because he plays good football? so what?
I agree with the majority of Gil's list but Moyes is miles above the likes of Di Matteo, Rodgers etc etc right now, they could surpass him one day but as of right now they shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.
