Some barca fans in this thread
Stop trying to discredit our CL record. Whether you like it or not, we have 9 European titles. A similar argument can be made that in the last 10 years, there wasn't any good teams challenging barca..

You should read about the competition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_history#Evolution_of_the_Championship_formatGiggity5313 wrote:Some barca fans in this thread

Basically it's an evolution process, and it has become harder to win after every change.
From 1955 the first Cup, contested between 16 invited teams (non champion) in a knockout format only
to current format
competition contested between 32 teams, which has a complex qualifying system, group phase (form filtering) and thus a harder knockout-phase.

No good teams? Chelsea, Inter, Man U, Bayern, Milan, even Liverpool added competition to Barca the last 10 years, just because Madrid don't doesn't mean no other club does.Giggity5313 wrote:Some barca fans in this thread

We won't win the CL, in fact I'm not even sure we can get past PSG without Missi

No way Barca wins it this year. If Pique gets booked against PSG, Barca will go into the semis with a centerback pairing consisting of Song and Adriano (a fullback and a positionally suspect CM who's mistaken to be a DM because he's black). Against possibly Bayern or Madrid.

do you really think people think song is mistaken for a DM because he is black? or because he played multiple seasons as a DM for arsenal?
anyways i dont think its barca's year for CL, they will be content with la liga as they should be, excellent title race.
as for the history comment, if they do equal milan's record then they DO deserve it. im not understanding how they dont deserve to be in the same realm history-wise if they actually do equal it history-wise. (though some of their cl wins can be put under a microscope)

You can only beat who's in front of you ffs.. Why didnt the great Barca win 5 in a row back then if it was so easy?

Milan won 2 CL's in a row just a few years before the competition was rebranded as the Champions League. And it's not like that wasn't a tough thing to do.
In fact, there is a good argument to say that winning the CL in the modern era was more difficult pre-1997 because during that time only the league champions and defending CL champions were able to participate.
So you had to win the league in one year, wait until next season, and then win two consecutive CLs. That means you have to hold a title-winning squad together for 3 seasons.
And this is in the age of big money, professionalism and elite athletes. It wasn't an uncompetitive competition by any means.
So, it's inevitable. Sooner or later a team will come along that puts together 2 all-conquering seasons in Europe.
But then doesn't that mean that its harder to the Club World Cup than the CL?
Imo its more like this, it was harder to qualify to the CL/EC then but its harder to win it today..
Oh and btw, just because Barca hadn't won the CL before, it doesn't mean that Barca doesn't have a history. I mean Barca had been a finalist 2 times before they actually managed to win it...

Because Real Madrid was obviously the best team in the world back then, and probably by a very big margin. But that doesn't change the fact that its harder to win it today then before. I mean, back then it wasn't that unusual for teams to win a couple in a row(both Ajax and Munich won 3 in a row while both Inter and Benfica won 2 in row), but today no one has won it twice in a row since Milan in the late 80's..

Re: if Barca wins CL this season...
By the way, out of curiousity I checked which teams of Germany were there during the high time of 'Los Blancos':Kev wrote:If it was that much easier to win 5 ECs in a row, then why didn't other teams do it?
1955/56: Rot-Weiss Essen (of all teams! )
1956/57: Borussia Dortmund
1957/58: Borussia Dortmund and Wismut Karl Marx Stadt (East Germany)
1958/59: Schalke 04 and Wismut Karl Marx Stadt (East Germany)
1959/60: Eintracht Frankfurt and Vörwärts Berlin (East Germany)
So obviously it would have been difficult for any of these to collect 5 wins in a row even if they'd have made it to the top (Eintracht Frankfurt at least made it runners-up, but were obliterated 7:3 by Real in the final)

We're really talking about technicalities here.
You say that bar the difficult qualifying for the EC, it is easier to win than the CL.
I say that the more difficult qualifying in the EC is part of what makes it just as hard a competition to win as the CL. In simple terms, you have to be in it to win it.

as barca fans, you guys should not support such threads as they become major jinx factors. let's talk about present , none of us own a crystal bowl.
and if barca does win, they will again silence critics... simple as that, so not worth a thread.

One other thing to take into account is one day less of rest, more legs = more travel, and generally less sympathy from FAs regarding scheduling. I know they are relatively minor details, but for clubs who often get in with smaller squads than those challenging for CL, it can be a big deal.Forza Rossoneri wrote:harhar11 wrote:How so?
