We were really up against it.

If they do then it makes sense for Europe to have the most slots.
No it's Africa with 53 countries. then Europe with 46 followed by Asia 44-45 or soNo one has a direct World Cup spot. Everybody has to fight for it here in the UEFA zone.Ausi90 wrote:Seriously do teams like England, Russia, Greece, Bosnia etc. really deserve a direct world cup spot?
I was refering to the groups. looking at the groups right now, answer me the question, are teams like England, Russia, Greece, Bosnia really world cup quality?

So your argument is: "Croatia showed a lot of fighting spirit vs Italy and Spain and even though it failed to qualify past the group stages it is still better than any team in South America"?tuddor wrote:Mandzukic, Modric, Srna, Jelavic, Olic, Kovacic, Rakitic and yugoslavian fighting spirit ... Who do you want to give the slots to, you propose taking off UEFA? South America? For what? So Guyana can get in on that shit?
Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay is perfectly fine TBH. Also be glad we mob up some teams like Azerbaijan, Northern Ireland, Kasakhstan etc, if they were in CONCAF they might catenaccio their asses into qualifying.
But yeah, for all I care replace Sweden with Malaysia, and Poland with Suriname.
LOL Poland will eliminate themselves if we keep playing like shit do no worries

Re: Does Europe have too many qualifycation slots for World Cup?
I had to re-read what our dear Tuddor wrote. Croatia better than all SA & African teams? Really? Because they came out of a group with Spain and Italy? Best I say Corinthians are better than any team in Europe considering they beat the reigning European champion in Chelsea in the CWC.
Seriously, Croatia is a quality team but such comments are borderline ridiculous. Also, Europe have more quality teams so it makes sense they have the lion share of slots. I have no issues honestly...

Well, quality-wise they are more fitting to a World Cup than, say, Trinidad&Tobago or Honduras or North Korea...Ausi90 wrote:I was refering to the groups. looking at the groups right now, answer me the question, are teams like England, Russia, Greece, Bosnia really world cup quality?

lol, no... the argument is the games themselves.. IF you actually would have watch them you'd understand how strong they were... Not many national teams have Casillas to save them late in the games when the score is 0-0 and if you lose you're out...
why is Argentine better than them? when did this generation something notable?

And what if you use the same argument against Uruguay ? They are the current Copa America Champions and performed fantastically well in the last WC.In short they have much more credentials than Brazil or Argentina going into the next tournament.Saying Croatia is better than them is just a disrespect to what they've achieved over the course of the last few years.
They might not have had a great qualifying campaign but they're still a solid outfit in my book.

Re: Does Europe have too many qualifycation slots for World Cup?
We're unbeaten for over a year, conceded the least amount of goals in qualifiers and scored the most, have the best forward line in the world, the best footballer in the planet and a very good midfield. And, well, we've actually beaten the team you are so proud of having lost towhy is Argentine better than them? when did this generation something notable?
And ffs losing to Spain is now a notable thing to do? Switzerland beat Spain at the WC, you don't see anyone claiming that Switzerland are better than 2 continents.
Look I'm not saying Croatia is not a good NT, but there's a difference between "Croatia are a very good team" which I would not have disagreed with at all, than "Croatia are better than Argentina and Brazil" which in terms of sheer talent just plummet Croatia. And others like Colombia and Uruguay that would likely stand a good chance against them.

Re: Does Europe have too many qualifycation slots for World Cup?
The numbers are ok. However certain changes in qualification process would be good (though not going to happen).
1. Why South American teams need to play 18-20 games when (if divided into two groups) eight or 10 (12 at best) would suffice.
2. The third team (aside Mexico & US) has always been a wildcard and never done anything other than making-up the number. Why not merge the two American zones.
3. Since Australia (the only one with any pedigree) has already went north, why not merge Ocenia with Asia.
4. Asia should (like Europe) have five qualifying groups (instead of multi-level) for its five slots. A pre-qualifying round to screen the minnows.

Yeah, Croatia did OK against Brazil. This team should beat Mexico and Cameroon.

Re: Does Europe have too many qualifycation slots for World Cup?
They did okay considering Mandz was out, but to be honest they did nothing with the ball for the first 60 minutes. If Alves and Marcelo did not collaborate for an epic flop I don't think Croatia would have looked as good. It was only in the last 20 minutes they they really kicked it up a gear, but Brazil were better than them for most of the match. That being said, they totally got screwed and could have ridden their lucky goal to a draw with another ref.

So you're basically saying if Brazil were better, Croatia would have had an even tougher time?
Interesting.

Re: Does Europe have too many qualifycation slots for World Cup?
I actually think the Croatian team on paper is much better than what they showed. What really disappointed me is that in spite of having such high quality midfielders they rarely tried to take control of the game.
