Re: Habemus Papam!
Youngest Pope was elected at the age of 24 in 99 AD Not sure if I read that right or wrong lol
Re: Habemus Papam!
The custom of changing the name to something Christian was invented when one Pope was elected whose original name was "Merkur". Couldn't have a guy with the name of a pagan God as Pope

Pope Francis 1 is renowned for his 2001 visit to a hospice, in which he washed and kissed the feet of 12 AIDS patients.

Re: Habemus Papam!
He is a very humble man, honest, and overall a great person. Great choice to put more transparency into the church and truly connect to people around the globe.
Re: Habemus Papam!
A pope for the poor
On the treatment of people: "In the city, slavery is the order of the day"
On poverty: "The social debt is immoral, unjust and illegitimate"
On corruption: "The poorest, for the better off, don't count"
(you can see the videos of these controversial statements here http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1562748-los-discursos-mas-polemicos-de-bergoglio )
Very cool and down to earth guy, was 2nd in the former elections, first franciscan pope?

The Wikileaks cables included detailed diplomatic assessments of all the 2005 papal candidates, including Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio:
-- BERGOGLIO, Jorge Mario: Born December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, and ordained December 13, 1969 during his theological studies at the Theological Faculty of San Miguel. Bergoglio served as Jesuit Provincial (elected leader of the order) for Argentina (1973-79) and rector of the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel (1980-86). After completing his doctoral dissertation in Germany, Bergoglio served as a confessor and spiritual director in Cordoba. In 1992, the Pope appointed him Assistant Bishop of Buenos Aires; then in 1997, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop (deputy archbishop with right of succession) of Buenos Aires; ultimately becoming Archbishop on February 28, 1998. Bergoglio is the vice-President of the Argentine Bishops Conference and serves on the Vatican's committee for the worldwide synod of bishops (a grouping of all bishops conferences). He speaks Spanish, Italian and German. Bergoglio exemplifies the virtues of the wise pastor that many electors value. Observers have praised his humility: he has been reluctant to accept honors or hold high office and commutes to work on a bus. What could count against him is his membership in the Jesuit order. Some senior prelates, especially conservatives, are suspicious of a liberal streak in the order, perhaps most pronounced in the U.S., but also present elsewhere. Bergoglio is said to prefer life in the local Church as opposed to a bureaucratic existence in Rome's ecclesiastical structures, but at the same time he has been willing to serve on the Vatican's various supervisory committees. This could indicate an ability to bridge the curia/local church divide that splits the College of Cardinal Electors, making him a good compromise candidate.

Re: Habemus Papam!
Cardinals getting around electing someone who is not European by electing someone whose parents were European
Its Wigglesworth's patented "Messi is Italian" theory....classic
Nah but in all seriousness he seems like a good guy, god knows the church could definitely use a shift in focus away from obsessing over obsolete dogmas and making meaningless changes to mass, towards actually helping the poor
Hopefully thats the direction he goes in

Re: Habemus Papam!
Very satisfied with this result given my tension surrounding the candidate. Pope Francis will be without a doubt a fantastic Pope due to his illustrious background of nothing but genuine contribution to his societies throughout his life. He represents the modern transition of Catholicism lead by the Italian republic and is the right man for the spot.
Not European? He is Italian

Thats kind of my point...The Church is almost 2000 years old yet we've yet to have a pope who wasn't a white-european (to my knowledge, at least)
Picking the guy from Argentina who is a first generation immigrant is sort of cutting the corner on that issue, IMO
Also even though the guy seems like a genuinely nice man, and his service to the poor especially is admirable...He has the same twisted backwards views on contraception/homosexuality as Benedict, which is troubling to me, to say the least.
But no one is perfect, and if he makes his Papacy about helping the poor then it will be well worth it

Re: Habemus Papam!
when two jesuit priests were speaking out against the argentinian junta in 1976 he didn't support them or say anything in their defence even after they were tortured... dat moral integrity
he also hates abortion, contraception, euthanasia and homosexuals but that's to be expected from an old white catholic... meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

Re: Habemus Papam!
Cool.
Now he should admit that catholicism - and christianity - is a fraud and dismantle the church or convert it into an ONG.
