No, it's just that Abate and Constant were preferred over him. I thought Abate played ok v Barca, Constant played badly but after the San Siro game, who could blame Allegri for choosing him for the return?

Crossing is one of the most difficult skills in the game.
It is very hard because you have to shoot the ball with power to avoid interception, precision and usually do it while you are running with speed. It's much easier to cross in a set piece than to cross like Abate does.

Problem with Abate is that he refuses to hit a cross in first time. A lot of the time he will have space to cross, but then he will take a touch and the defender closes him down. We need to make him practice first-time crossing in training. Its not that hard to cross decently, not saying cross amazingly but at least get 50% of crosses into decent positions.

That being said, I will always value defensive ability far more than attacking ability for a full-back.

What is also being ignored is that, over the years,(since Abate has been playing at right back) most of our attacks have always been built from the left hand side, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Cassano and even Ibra to an extent all drift towards the left hand side and cut in. Which leaves the right hand side empty. Also till now, the right center midfield spot was covered by someone who was full of running or a dm, Ambrosini or Flamini in previous seasons.

Irrespective of the above reasons, this season our attack has been much more balanced on either side, and still he hasn't improved which means that it is his fault. Also, I'm not sure if anybody else has noticed, but most of the times Abate crosses with his head down, and I don't know how in the world it is going to help him find the target. The most accurate cross that he ever produced was actually a mishit shot which fell into Pato's path in the derby two years ago . Having said that, I don't believe that he has not got in him to be a good crosser, otherwise he wouldn't have played the early part of his senior career as a Winger.

Maybe Abate should just shoot everytime, all of his shots turn into crosses anyway.
