Well its the defender within Abate that has improved drastically
But I guess his midfield game would have improved somewhat also

He'd be nothing more than average as a midfielder, he has found his role for the future. As he progresses and learns to consistently contribute and diversify in attack in Allegri's system, then possibly we could begin to see the potential for him to play in midfield - at least in a hypothetical sense.
Choosing between them now though, there is no choice as far as I can see.
