The New Bernabeu
I had a thread set up about this in the old forum, the plans to renovate the Bernabeu have been in motion for quite a while, and were awaiting the approval from the city. ElConfidencial is reporting that the City council gave the ok, and details what the renovation works will be.
-New commercial zone in El Paseo de la Castellana.
-New parking
-Some club offices and areas of the stadium will change places.
-The location of the shopping Center, La Esquina del Bernabeu, and of the current offices will become green zones.
-the economic impact could approach 200M (no specific details)
The external facade of the Bernabeu will be modernized as well. They will introduce a structure that will allow the stadium to get closed off (roof) entirely. The Nest of Beijing and The Allianz Arena are the inspiration
Nest of Beijing
Allianz Arena (in works ofc)
The Idea has the support of the mayor of Madrid, since it fits into his project to have an emblematic stadium for his olympic project.
Perez wants the renovation works to be done in 2013, just in time for his reelection (smart man).

That Allianz Arena style except in white would look amazing.

Re: The New Bernabeu
Well when Germany plays, the Allianz Arena is colored white. I agree it looks awesome.

Oh really I didn't know it changes colour, but it will always be white for us anyway.

Great to hear the plans are set and approved.
I'm also a little puzzled by the talk of the shopping center and other lines of business, but hopefully TMO can fill us in.

i guess, with the financial fair play rules coming in we are looking to diversfy so as to increase revenue. Under perez real buy a superstar to generate revenue but that will be less possible due to the rules so it is best to find different sources of income. I think it is a good idea you keep all your eggs in the same basket.

@theaguia
I don't think RM are all too concerned about FFP. Even with excessive purchasing (Kaka, Ronaldo, Alonso etc) the club has still managed a profit for the last five years.

And they will continue. There is no necessity really for an increase in revenue through stadium developments although they would be very welcome to Madridsta.

I fully understand the idea of diversifying revenue streams, but I meant that I was puzzled by the translation (as Nick was too). TMO speaks Spanish, so I figured he could clarify it.

Yeah, that was part of the initial plans. They've been scrapped it seems.

I don't think the idea of an intra-stadium hotel was ever a smart one.

Re: The New Bernabeu
Oh God, I really don't want this. The Bernabeu is one of the last true football stadiums left; don't make some stupid modern monstrosity from it.
Ajax' new stadium back in the day was a tragedy too, no atmosphere etc.
Hope they do it okay.

This is fantastic news and I'm pumped on it. I hope they do something about the food situation there. Last time I was there it was laaame. Nothing good to eat.

Re: The New Bernabeu
As long as it stays a football stadium.
You are there to watch football, not to go shopping, have crap entertainment at half time, to eat etc.
Trust me, we will regret this. At least they are not building a new stadium though.

More attractions = more people = more money = better players = more trophies
A lot of games this year didn't sell out. We have 80 000 seats that we need to fill and ideally they would be full every game. Alternative revenue sources are never a bad idea.

Re: The New Bernabeu
Well, it isn't all about money though.
Trust me, I have witnessed this in person with Ajax. It was a DISASTER. I tell you. Many of the original fans left, the chemistry was gone. Ajax decline coincided with the new stadium.
If you are interested, I can give you the whole long rant about it, since my uncle was the chief researcher about what failed exactly with the new stadium. Yes, more capacity, yet, the feel of the football was gone.
It was just a day of Disney for adults.
I am not sure how often you guys all go to football matches in stadiums, but trust me, more entertainment = bad.

it seems that when a new stadium is built/major renovations there is a short decline in success.
