It's impossible to rank players from different eras.

If there wasn't for Messi,CR would be easily rated among the best of all time.He had the misfortune of being rivaled by Messi and brilliant Barcelona.Bad timing...I also have more respect for CR than Messi, cause he worked like hell to achieve what he has.Messi just happened to have a ridiculous amount of talent. Not lessening the success of Messi,of course.Even though Ronaldo is a *bleep*.

Achievements? Not the best way to rank players really.
Wouldnt Seedorf's achievements make him better than alot of people?
Should be based on his playing level surely?

Nah the only area he competes with Messi is goalscoring and the best players ever like Messi dominated all over the pitch.....
CR is great and all but he wouldn't be an all time great if Messi didn't exist.
I'd also argue that Messi is the reason CR pushed himself so much and would be a lesser player without him.
This is what makes Messi so great even if he couldn't finish he would still be the best player in the world.

I think that's valid for Messi too. These 2 guys can't be separated IMO.

They can. I dont even know why they are rivals honestly. They stopped being that in 09' at the VERY latest. Since then it has been one way traffic.

Re: Where does Cristiano Ronaldo fit in football's history ?
Football intelligence is the common denominator between all greats from all eras. Offensives players are the most remembered.
Messi along with Ibra are the smartest offensive players for the last few years. CR is a beast, but he is honestly not to the level of Messi. Messi easily evolved into an all time great the last two years, his play is quiter but much more effective. It is not his goalscoring record who makes him such, bu his overall play. His record won't be the same if he plays for Milan for example, but he would still be the best offensive talent in football.

Re: Where does Cristiano Ronaldo fit in football's history ?
Vibe you don't seriously think Messi is Ronaldinho, right? No one can sustain that level of performance without serious work, and Messi has a fantastic work ethic. His talent may shine, but there's a serious amount of hard work behind it.Vibe wrote:If there wasn't for Messi,CR would be easily rated among the best of all time.He had the misfortune of being rivaled by Messi and brilliant Barcelona.Bad timing...I also have more respect for CR than Messi, cause he worked like hell to achieve what he has.Messi just happened to have a ridiculous amount of talent. Not lessening the success of Messi,of course.Even though Ronaldo is a *bleep*.

Talent with work = Pele.
Talent without work = Garrincha.
Messi is definitely no Garrincha

But Ronaldo is maybe the most hard-working player ever. (speaking of all-time greats, because he obviously is)

Obviously how.. you stalk him in practice?likeastar wrote:But Ronaldo is maybe the most hard-working player ever. (speaking of all-time greats, because he obviously is)
People here saying Ronaldo works harder then Messi is a more than stupid statement I mean honest first of all how do you even judge that?
By appearance? please explain because I could simply counter that and say had Ronaldo spent less time tanning and working on his hair he'd be better.. lol

To be fair Ronaldo work ethic is remarkable. The "all time" crap was some unnecessary hyperbole though.

Re: Where does Cristiano Ronaldo fit in football's history ?
He is a great player : same bracket than Rivalodo, ronaldinho, Henry , raul , eto'o , iniesta, drogba, xavi, figo , ... even if he didn't win many trophies like them.
but what make people remmenber you as a great player is the emotions you give to them and this is why this thread's title is written as a question. Ronaldo has scored 171 in 171 for Real wich is awesome but did he score emotionals/importants goals like eto'o for example ( 2 goals in 2 finals for barcelona, and the one in 2006 against arsenal almost made me almost cry)
He is seen as a goal machine, too bad. Scoring the last P-K against Spain and brought Portugal to the finals for example is a way to make history

OT: Smack dab right in front of Ibra, by the skin of his teeth. In the top 50-100 area as RG said. Far too many players to get more specific than that.
