Easily double figures, and when I watch it Messi often gets past Pepe only to be fouled. That's hardly dealing with Messi. Anybody on this forum could step on his hand and pull him down to the floor.

@juventus, ac milan was parking an airplane, nesta was not alone at stopping messi , for god's sake, messi would eat him alive with his pace if it was an open game, messi was always double teamed and so on,
But as you can see from the video i posted, 1v1 , in an open game (which recent el clasicos have been for past 1.5 yrs) Pepe has done very well against him... All nesta had to do was position himself well... if messi had ANY space (like in the video where he was in free sprint or dribbling) nesta would get sliced.

@ganso, did i say pepe makes no mistake? ofcourse that clearance was bad, but everyone makes such mistakes, and that video has nothing to do with messi vs pepe 1 vs 1 defending... and there's way too many videos on internet... just seach pepe vs barca, and you'll see the dozens of time he dispossess xavi and iniesta.

again, im not saying messi can't get past him or anything, but he is the best possible player to have to decrease messi's effectiveness drastically!

using barcelona as an example to show pepe' s deficiencies isnt a worthy arguement by any means

actually, using barcelona as an example, you can see pepe's superiority to all other CB's. He is a beast, physical, Fast, aggressive, good in the air...
shows up in big games.... he has performed amazing in almost every el clasico, in Euros! in Champions League

Kandahar, your right in saying Pepe is the most effective defender in shutting down Messi though he still gets backfooted time to time. Not to mention that Pepe has help from friking Alonso, Khedria to shut down Messi and even still Messi gets past them all through simple sheer skill or a pass. His pace and strength especially makes him so effective of shutting down a player such as Messi.
