I agree with you that blind hate is childish and only ends up in violence and hooliganism.
Stealing and hanging banners in rival stadiums, the city nicknames (Herne West, Lüdenscheid-Nord) all add a tongue in cheek quality to the rivalries - while there are always going to be extremists the number is quite low.
I'm pretty sure Idri does the support other Buli clubs internationally thing not because of nationalism but to lessen the embarrassment of being Dortmund's bitch for two years. But by beating Real Madrid this simply enforces the strength of the Buli atm (and thus reasoning that Dortmund won the Buli because they were good, not that Bayern is bad) which brings me to my next point.
When Bayern is mocked it frequently comes along with inferior league type comments which insults every club in the Buli's so part of the general Buli support internationally is a defence mechanism - people don't want the very competition their team plays in being dissed.
Then there's the lack of Buli followers in this forum anyways so we all huddle in our Buli thread to avoid the Madrid/Barca/EPL fanboys while trying to promote the Buli by having a massive thread in General Discussion.
Germany is also unique in Europe with its sense of unification despite its differing cultures (Bavaria comes to mind) when everyone else wants to split up and gain independence so this sentiment carries through in international competitions.
The fact that rivalries are almost always region based compared to other leagues success, controversy and political based rivalries allows international fans to keep a similar sentiment like Sushi describes. The RM - Barca rivalry is politically and success based whilst Liverpool - Manchester is heavily success and partly regional with a sprinkle of controversy.
One of the things that makes the 1860/Bayern rivalry on the hostile end is the class difference induced rivalry which is supplemented by controversy (Allianz Arena)

I hate Man Utd and Spuds 100%, I kinda don't mind City and Arsenal that much but saying that I'd rather them lose most games.
It's disgusting on this forum to see how the Madrid plastics on this forum aka the large majority would rather Barca win a CL game against a team from another country.

So i have no problem with smaller clubs like Schalke or Dortmund winning in Europe because they won't get anything in the Bundesliga or the Pokal
And if we meet Schalke or Dortmund they will get kicked out of Europe, so I don't understand the problem here. I can understand you as a Schalke fan, because you get destroyed by Bayern every f*kin single time they meet each other on the pitch. So in your position i would hate Bayern too i guess
First statement doesn't make sense. The past 2 years Dortmund(2 league + 1 cup) and Schalke(1 cup) have won all 4 domestic trophies while Bayern have had none.
Dortmund pathetically crashed in the group stages and could only focus on the Bundesliga for the rest of the season. Coincidentally they regained Bundesliga form after they crashed out. Meanwhile, Bayern with a very thin squad and injured Schweinsteiger, tried to juggle both CL and Bundesliga.
At least that's my excuse.

Re: Bundesliga Fans
Dortmund crashed out due to naivety and inexperience and their Buli form was a result of missing Sahin - Once Gündogan started stepping up to the plate Dortmund started doing better, not once they were kicked out of the CL. Remember that Dortmund wasn't actually dominated out of the CL, it was crappy finishing and individual defensive mistakes. They still suffer from crappy finishing.

When other English/German clubs fail in Europe I make fun of them.
When they do well, I make fun of other leagues.
So European football is a win-win situation for me

Re: Bundesliga Fans
I agree with the Herne-West supporting OP in that I wouldn't support a direct rival.
That being said, I support St. Pauli and Eintracht Frankfurt, and as such I don't have any real rivals to care about.
If Kickers Offenbach or Hansa Rostock ever make it to the Champion's League I'll make sure to cheer against them, but until then the UCL is what helps me keep track of our NT players on an international platform between the Euros and WCs.
And since there isn't enough international football, international club football has to do. So yeah I support German clubs in the UCL. Why wouldn't I?
I don't give two shits about either side of the Ruhrderby, so I can purely appreciate them on the merit of the good football they either do or don't play.
And outside of Herne-West and Lüdenscheid Nord, that probably holds true for most supporters.
Well except Hamburg, probably, because seriously, f*ck the HSV. Vorstadtclub.

which brings me to another example. most hsv fans would support this marketing gag to come back to first league, just for the sake of having a derby and having more reason to beat up their players at train stations. them playing internationally is out of the question anyway. nobody in hamburg gives a shit about st.pauli and what they are trying to portray. they find their fans in people from the outside like viva who come up with such stuff and underline the club's constant craving for recognition. another rivalry that is made bigger by the media than it actually is. it's all good

Never seen anyone mistype "in" "I'm"
What comes to your message, it's a fair point but relative. In group stages, sure it can work like that, but hardly in the knock-out stages nevermind the final.

Swype with high prediction settings is my guess.
As for the second part, tell that to the Barca and Madrid fans who had a clasico in the middle of the SF's.

Don't you dare bringing Barca / Real here! If I see that again, there will be no further warning, but docking some percentage of your warning bar. (Admins/Mods have decided to shoot down the ubiquitous Barca/Real fights as of now.)

Great thread. Italian and Spanish fans don't seem to do this, but English and German ones do. I think it perhaps has to do with the perception in multi-league forums to compete to see who has "the best league in the world", but I agree that it's crazy to support a rival in Europe for this reason.
On another note, I've personally met (as in, off the internet) Germans who have told me that it's unpatriotic to not support Bayern in the CL.

Isn't it the other way around?
Italian fans supporting rival teams to get that 4th spot in Europe back and Spanish fans to "prove" why EPL ISN'T the best league.
Since I've joined here I've seen a lot of fans that support English clubs laugh at Manchester United and City failures in Europe.
Can't disagree with German fans though.

Re: Bundesliga Fans
Well we got like 5 Germans here, and most are Bayern fans, since Bayern always win (well, almost, you know what I mean) they have little hate for their rivals in the league, the most hate a proper Bayern supporter should have, is probably for 1860, and they don't play in the same flight. Similarly, my first club (St. Pauli) doesn't play 1st flight and as such, I don't have anyone to butt heads with. The next best thing for me is Eintracht Frankfurt, and we don't have strong traditional rivalries, probably the strongest with Offenbach, and we hate Bayern as much as any other club.
RWO has much the same "problem" as me, as in not having a proper rival in the 1st flight. The best I can do is hating on the HSV, and that's just not fun when they're battling relegation.
If we had more Schalke and Dortmund fans here, it would probably be more "interesting". :p

And that a Lüdenscheider supports Bayern just proves my point that they are mentally retarded people. But seriously, even the great majority of these idiots would never support Bayern.
First of all your full of shit because an ultra from another team will not talk to you since they are hardcore on supporting their team this means they will not socialize with people that support other clubs. That is ultras 101!
Second the only people in any country that will hate on their rivals like you describe are ultras. They are so hardcore that club comes before country. This I will agree with but other fans who are for the most part normal will support other clubs for the good of the country and league.
No two ways about it that is the way it is. I wa an ultra and I can go into frightening detail but there are some fragile people here so I won't. You can stop Trolling and making up stuff now!

Re: Bundesliga Fans
I haven't seen an Inter fan support Milan in the CL, or the other way around, whereas I have seen that for Liverpool and United. Although to be fair when the spurs were in the CL Arsenal fans did hate on them. Most Barca and Real fans don't really care much for the rest of La Liga performing well, but there are a few people that do.urbaNRoots wrote:Isn't it the other way around?

While I agree with you that the multi league forum plays a factor I believe the Newscorp (Sky/ESPN-STAR) propaganda about the EPL plays a bigger role - in the long term subtle things like EPL being used as a synonym for football (e.g. After a great football match it's "This is why the EPL is great" and not "This is why football is great") sink in.
I'm unfamiliar with EPL broadcasting in the Americas but in SEA ESPN-STAR has a huge influence and is included in basic cable packages all over SEA and has high production values whilst other leagues are usually on local channels with a lower budget.
While it's shallow to say this remember that the EPL is broadcast by the same corporation that has gifted us FOX News, bless their poor souls. So they know how to propaganda and it's this undeniable propaganda which instills a belief which can only be likened to religious zeal and we all know what happens when someone feels their faith is under threat.
Even despite recent results, excluding Chelsea's fluke abuse of good luck (which is kicking them in the ass looking at recent matches) these premfaces have the audacity to assume that the EPL is the number one league when it's really about Buli vs BBVA on which we're still waiting on the verdict. The English media only just now started to realize how much they've been overrating their team and have acted accordingly.
I still stand by German nationalism being the main factor in a Buli fans support of German teams and even when I was young and playing in the Bayern C-Jugend I wanted to play for Germany and I'm sure every German player feels the same.
You can understand this better if you compare the German Unification which had been preceded by strong desires and ideas about unification to the Italian unification filled with rivalry.
Germany united to defend itself against a Napoleon III who had been tricked by Bismarck into thinking there'd be a German on the spanish throne and because he didn't want to be surrounded Germans he attacked and that's how the first Kaiser was crowned in Versailles.
Italian unification however is a story about annexation and civil war. Sardinia conquered much of Northern and Central Italy while warring with The Kingdom of Two Sicilies.
