15 goals in 72 games in the championship = 13 million

Yeh 13m seems a lot. Especially when it's Sunderland paying so much for a young talent.

There is no way this is true, Sunderland will not spend that much on a young kid.
The kid wants to move to a big club.

Re: Sunderland agrees £13mil deal for Wickham
Phil Jones - £18,000,000
Jordan Henderson - £20,000,000
Connor Wickham - £13,000,000
Prices for young, English players are growing out of control. There's even strong noises of us, of all teams, dishing out £12,000,000 for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who plays in League 1.
Is it really wise for Sunderland to spend what could be the majority of their budget on a young, unproven striker?

Re: Sunderland agrees £13mil deal for Wickham
so i take you watch a lot of championship football then.Crimson wrote:wow that's alot of money for a very average player....
i mean, hes a kid, only 18yrs old: how can you write him off that way lol (unless you've watched him enough, then my bad)
im gonna be honest, never really watched him closely (except yt vids or few mins here and here, like most here i presume)
and in those he does looks promising.
(yt can make everyone looks good its true, but not everyone stands out in championship at 18)
and then add to that the fact that hes english, and there you have those few millions added to his price tag ofc

English players are overpriced, you can find 20 times better players in other European countries.

Man United have been buying English players for years now at inflated prices and they've been consistent winners.
Just saying
That said, 9M is not really that steep. He is 18, and is a good player in Championship. You don't have to wait for a player to become world class and then pay the big bucks for him.
Take it this way..,..Sunderland buy him for 9M. He plays well for them in PL, gives them 2-3 years of good service, becomes an England International and his value will go to 20M bracket. Then he'll be sold to a bigger club. Sunderland get 2-3 years of service from a player and then sell him at a profit.
It's a gamble of course as he may never fulfill his potential...but so is every signing

Thats just united, what about World cup and European championship, dont get me wrong I am a England fan. The paper make these players god and never show up. These players must prove them self first before they can be sold for big money.Sepi wrote:Raptorgunner wrote:English players are overpriced, you can find 20 times better players in other European countries.

to be honest. I don't think Engladn's failure in international level is because of their players. It's never fair to judge players based on their international games at any level since it will make Salif Diao or Diouf look world class, and make Lampard look a championship level of player.
The thing with English players is...you OVER-PAY for them when you buy them, but when you SELL them, you get Over the Top money as well. Spurs got 5M for Jamie Ohara after loaning him out to Wolves for 2 seasons. Championship players get traded for 4-6M level. James Vaughn, a reserve striker at Everton who's done NOTHING in his career other than a few loan spells at Crystal Palace was traded for 3M to Norwich. DJ Campbell is probably worth 5-6M in today's market (would have been more had it not been for his age). It's just the English market...It's totally different than anywhere else in the world.
I don't think it's fair to use failure in international level as a reason to slate English players. Liverpool dominated Europe in 70s and 80s with mostly British players, while they were hardly effective in their national teams and the state of England's national team wasn't really better than today..Scotland etc

Henderson was 16m.
But yeah, that's a good point.
Bojan leaving for 9m to Roma, and Wickham is going for 14... Tf?

United and Liverpool setting a very bad example on the smaller teams :lol!:.
Wickham is a great talent though still too much money especially for Sunderland.
