The Grand Slam Of Football
We all know tennis has four grand slams and anyone who wins all four is said to have completed the grand slam.
I think we can define a football grand slam as comprising of the World Cup, the Euro/Copa America/other continental cups, the Uefa Champions League and the League title.
So which are the players still playing football who have won the football grand slam.
Iker Casillas
Carles Puyol
Xabi Alonso
Xavi
Andres Iniesta
David Villa
Ronaldinho
Rivaldo
Thierry Henry
If Spain wins tonight the following players will join this list - Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Pedro.
If Italy wins tonight the following players will join this list - Andrea Pirlo.
Anyone else you can think of that I may have missed?
However to date no coach has had this honor.
If Spain wins the trophy tonight, Vicente Del Bosque will become the first coach in football history to receive this unique honor.

Well, it depends on whether you add goal-keeper coaches. In that case, Sepp Maier would fit the bill.messixaviesta wrote:However to date no coach has had this honor.
Player: World Cup 1974, European Cup 1972, Cup Winners' Cup 1967, Champions League 1974, 1975, 1976, Club World Cup 1976
GK coach: World Cup 1990, European Cup 1996, UEFA Cup 1996, Champions League 2001, Club World Cup 2001
(Plus a generous amount of Bundesliga wins and DFB-Pokal wins both as player & GK Coach.)
I think Sepp Maier must have won about any cup in existence that he could get

Nice bit of trivia there..
Had Lucio and Kaka participated in the Copa America in 2007 they would've completed the 'Grand Slam' of football too..

If Ramos wins a CL he will be in there aswell.
Also, watch how many Spaniards there are in there.

Re: The Grand Slam Of Football
That's because the question was about players still playing - and as Spain won the last Euro & WC, it is pretty logical that they would make the majoritySe7en wrote:Also, watch how many Spaniards there are in there.
(from the '70es, you would have quite some German players there)

Re: The Grand Slam Of Football
I thought that messixaviesta will make a topic about legacy/achievements after this Final, but he did it before it. Grand Slam, sounds good.
As for Spain, if they win VV, Busquets, Pique and Pedro will join Grand Slam club. You forgot Pedro in your list messixaviesta.

Nice points. I was speaking only from head coach's perspective though.

I didn't think of Kaka but I thought of Lucio, checked him on Wiki and found he has never won Copa America.

Thanks a lot matpol. Great point that I missed Pedro. I have just edited my original post to include him.
Re: The Grand Slam Of Football
It's all over.
Here are all the players still playing professional football who have completed the grand slam.
Iker Casillas
Victor Valdes
Carles Puyol
Gerard Pique
Sergio Busquets
Xabi Alonso
Xavi
Andres Iniesta
Pedro
David Villa
Ronaldinho
Rivaldo
Thierry Henry
The only coach to have done that is Vicente Del Bosque.
So at the risk of being pelted with rotten eggs and tomatoes by almost everyone here I will say that in a sense Vicente Del Bosque is the greatest football manager of all time and can only be equaled or surpassed by the likes of Josep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho in the future.

Does that imply Indians should lack a complete knowledge of any other sport?

Yeah but the football league has negligible support There are sooo many people who love football more than cricket, but the same support is just not there to develop the game.. May be a problem of being a developing country, but its more complicated and an explanation of the factors would just massively derail this thread.
But yes. Indians, whether or not into cricket, do have a sound knowledge of a lot of other sports
