Stupid if you ask me, NO player deserves that much, no matter how good he is, just stupid, plain stupidity, I can't believe it 33M Euros.!!!!!

I don't think Messi even asks for that amount of money, the club just notices how important he is and offers him improved contracts, which he accepts.

I am not targeting this against Messi alone, CR7 makes 29.4M in third place.

I'm pretty sure he only makes 12M or so from the club and makes the rest on advertising. Are the figures pre-tax or after-tax?

Those players earn the right to be the highest paid in their teams/clubs so it is what it is.

I dont get why people are so salty about them earning all that money, I ask, who else should get it? Its not like the clubs are hamstrung by those wages either, they are still out their signing players.

The players who deserve this kind of thread are those who arent that good and are earning way more than they should be.

Messi is a bad example because players like him don't come around often and he completely deserves that money. There are people around the world (especially the US) who make bucket loads of undeserved money.

Look at "artists" like Pitbull, Ke$ha ... garbage artists but they make tons of cash. It's just how the world works. Kim Kardashian is another airhead who really hasn't done sh1t, is useless to the world and society, but is extremely rich.

The big trade-off is that their personal lives becomes circuses. Everywhere the famous person goes, people notice, people try to snap pictures, paparazzi, reporters trying to interview you all the time, tabloids making up rumors about your life, watching your every move. That sh1t must get super annoying. Then again, some people thrive off of attention, but i can guarantee that they're tired of it.

With the wage I make (slightly above middle class wage), i'm in the top 0.91% of the richest people in the world and am aware of how fortunate I am to be in this position. I would be lying if I said I wouldn't like to be the best footballer on the planet, and sure it would be nice to be a multi-millionaire, but money isn't everything... When I was broke, I really really wanted to make good money. Now that I do, I'm working my ass off non-stop for it and have sacrificed a lot of time and things that I now miss dearly and can't get back.

As spectators, we are naturally jealous of the massive amounts of money athletes/actors/artists etc make, but from the outside, we only see the positives and not the negative aspects of what that money and fame brings. Many of them can't cope with the pressure and haveing their personal lives in the spotlight ALL THE TIME.

People for gods sake we are talking about 33,000,000 Euros/annum Euros here, its funny how people here defend that, I would suggest all should take a break from FM and FIFA cause its even funnier how that made us think about millions, I am not saying they should play for free or earn like mid class workers, but there is no way on earth I can digest how a footballer makes anything above 5m-8m be it salaries, adverts, or what ever it is.

It's what the market is willing to pay him... if his employers judge him to be worth that much, who are you to say otherwise? Advertising companies judge associating his image with them to be worth millions, and Barca judges his salary to be the ones corresponding to that of the best player in the world. And both make more money off the deals they have with him than what they're paying him, a lot more.

Let's say for example, that Audi signs Messi for an ad. Audi expects his association with him to increase revenues by 10M more than the best alternative ad. Are they crazy to pay Messi 3M? No, absolutely not. And Messi has many of these going on, as do all top professional players.

Anyway just wanted to point it out, obviously people paying for ads don't do it for free and expect decent returns from it, thats not the point. I just don't see it reasonable, and would categorize them as "highly over paid", many professions out their that actually contribute much more to the society and don't earn 1/1000 of what those footballers earn, way below that.

But good for them I guess.

Footballers earn as much as the industry can afford. And if the industry can afford those wages it is only because of fans like us that pay to watch them, directly or indirectly.

Seriously, who expects anything less for the best player in the world?

Now if, say, Bendtner was making that kind of money, i would be quite shocked. Then again, he's dating royalty so he's probably loaded up the arse
