Batistuta: "Had I played for Barca or United, I would have won the Ballon D'Or"

Sept ans que Gabriel Batistuta a raccroché les crampons. Mais, en décembre dernier, il est sorti de sa retraite pour revenir dans le milieu et devenir directeur sportif du Colon de Sante Fe, un club de l'élite qui aspire à terme à remporter son premier titre. Ce mardi, l'ancien international (78 sélections, 56 buts) s'est longuement confié dans un entretien accordé à France Football. «Batigol» parle de sa nouvelle vie, de sa carrière, du foot actuel...

Gabriel Batistuta évoque également la sélection argentine et Lionel Messi. «Messi est un phénomène qui évolue dans une équipe comptant plusieurs phénomènes, avance l'ex-attaquant de la Fiorentina, la Roma et l'Inter Milan entre autres. Il appartient à un groupe qui s'appuie sur une vraie philosophie. Un garçon de treize ans de la Masia (le centre de formation du FC Barcelone) pense déjà de la même façon qu'un joueur de l'équipe première. C'est un exemple à suivre. Il faut construire une identité de jeu qui perdure. Chaque formation a son identité. On ne va pas demander aux Italiens de jouer bien, de briller : on sait qu'ils préfèrent le jeu défensif, la contre-attaque. Le Brésil a toujours eu des latéraux qui débordent et qui centrent. Ils ont su conserver leur identité. C'est ce que nous devons rechercher pour l'Argentine.»

With the amount of talents available during Bati's peak time, it's a pretty debatable situation.

But given that how he and Rui Costa saved Fiorentina from time to time, I think the argument is in favor of him getting a balon d'or had he played for bigger/better club instead.

I think it's not that big of an exaggeration to say that Bati (almost) single handedly deliver the scudetto to Roma in 2000

but that was because he pioneered the club's long throw/hoofball style and tactics

What an amazing player, I am glad to have grew up idolizing this guy. Alongside, Raul and Ronaldo, one of the true great strikers of the 1990s. I do think he could have won a ballon d or at a bigger club, but there was so much competition back then.
