Of the 22 goals Lionel Messi has scored for Argentina, you want to know how many of them actually mean anything?
1 goal in 2006 World Cup in which Argentina won 6 nil anyway.
2 goals in the 2007 Copa America
4 goals in the 2010 World Cup Qualification
and 2 goals in the 2014 World Cup Qualification

3 goals and 11 assists in the group stages.
Penaldo on the other hand scored in the Semi-final of the Euro2004 at 19.
Btw. Messi has scored in CA07 Semi-final at 20.

Re: Messi does hat-trick
Messi's never been used right for the national team so it doesn't surprise me. He's never played badly, normally he's their best player. Its just Argentina suck.
If this coach actually does a reasonable job for once, maybe Argentina will get their sh*t together. We all know Messi is incredible, but he can't do everything for them. This year, maybe he will have a good year.

It's a team game guys. Not even Messi can't do anything in a very mediocre team like Argentina. Maxi Rodriguez, Sosa, Rojo, Zabaleta, their CBs...? They have no chance of winning any major trophy anytime soon, and it's not Messi's fault.

As of now his club form is in no way whatsoever near his NT form, but according to wikipedia's figures he's still doing better than anyone else on the NT. This has to be addressed.

So 13 of the 22 goals Messi has scored has been in friendlies which means exactly squat.
9 of them in official competitions, against pretty sub-par teams.
Yeah best ever player all right.....

Messi is crap. We don’t need threads to remind us.
Well occasionally he rapes Madrid and wins CL titles but that’s about it.

Me too…
To be honest other than admiring Messi’s unique skill I have no amount of fanboyism for him.
It’s just ridiculous when people feel like diminishing him based on sub par appearances in a sub par managed team.
Actually I was feeling the same way when Moudrid fans were blatantly diminishing Ronaldo after the first classico this year.
Anyway. I am not concerned about his personal achievements and I would be more than OK if wins next to nothing with Argentina, as long as he keeps performing with Barca

Here we go again... it's stupid to judge Messi's contribution based on the amount of goals he scores when for the better part of the past 3 years he's been used as an AM. Now Sabella is actually playing him as a SS and we're seeing him score more. That's only reasonable. Anyone that watches Argentina knows that Messi is the standout player there and has been for a while. Not to mention that he sometimes gets fielded alongside some pretty average teammates. The fact of the matter is that if Tevez had made a penalty then we might be talking very differently about his NT performance.

Re: Messi does hat-trick
While this may be the case, it really wasn't my point. My point was that although Argentina haven't been doing well, It's not like Messi has been playing worse than any other star on the team. As far as for when it matters, again. No other player on the team can really claim much more than Leo. That's what I was getting at.Crimson wrote:barca 2011 wrote:I know Messi hasn't won anything major with ARG, but he does have 22 goals in 67 caps now with the NT. Messi is the best player in the argentina team, and by a long long way. If his teammates were outperforming him he would be having big problems. I dont think anyone can argue that messi doesnt play very well for argentina compared to normal standard of play. Where the problem comes is his all-time status, hes rightly being considered as one of the best players ever, but his national team performances doesnt live up to that status. He is nowhere near as decisive for his country as other all time greats were. But hes still quite young, and has time to fix this

Re: Messi does hat-trick
He does perform, quite well in all honesty, but what he does for Barcelona is completely different what he does for Argentina. Why?! One possible reason is that Argentina isn't as well drilled as Barcelona, isn't as good as Barcelona and simply under achieves on the world stage (or better put it, when it matters). Good hattrick against Switzerland but it didn't do much in the grand scheme of things.
Just a friendly...

Its Messi's job to score a hattrick.....really....smh
Dude is playing with a utter trash, he got a midfield featuring a centerback, two fodders no more than 5 on the forum know with any detail and Maxi.....Maxi...
And people are
A. Surprised he isnt involved in some games.
B. Discrediting the opponent when he destroys them anyway...like the youthful Swiss team got worse apparently since beating Spain...like anyone watched them closely since then lol
I wonder what the excuse will be if he actually does something significant in a major competition.
I know the Copa excuse already...lack of European teams lol

Well just put Mascherano next to Gagod and play Otamendi.Zanetti retired? Or why dosen't he play?
Pastore's inconsistency is fine....he'd be a starter on almost all international teams bar about 4-5.
WC attack.
A midfield I rate more highly than most because Gago is much better than the general perception.
A decent defense...nothing amazing but nothing to say they should automatically be leaky.
Overall good team , not at all utter trash. Not his fault but the team isn't lacking for talent.
