I don't think so, but nobody's ever clarified if I think about it.

Well, in Germany there is no "Christmas Eve" - we say "Weihnachten" (="Christmas") for all days from 24th to 26th (or actually it is Weihnachten, 1. Weihnachtsfeiertag and 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag). But the real date that is celebrated with gifts and everything within the closer family is the 24th where we say "Frohe Weihnachten", that is, "Merry Christmas".

25th and 26th is usually reserved for tedious visits to other relatives and feasting with them (lunch, coffee+cake, dinner...). You normally only say "Frohe Weihnachten" from 24th to 26th of December. It would feel weird to say it before or later here, unless you go to holidays and don't see people on one of the Christmas days - then you say as goodbye that you wish them a Merry Christmas and happy New Year even.

I shall celebrate Newton's birthday today because we knew surely that he existed and he actualy changed the world so he is worh of celebrating :dance:

LOL, actually one thing occurred to me - the 24th *is* also called "Heiligabend" (which would literally be translated as "Holy evening"), but nonetheless, presents are given then (mostly at 18:00 in the evening).

For a long time, in my area there were no buses / public transport available between Dec 24th 16:00 and Dec 25th at 10:00 and also shops usually close down at Dec 24th 13:00 and only open again Dec 27th at 08:00, as it is expected that people want to celebrate the evening (and holidays) at home with their families.

In the last time it has changed a little and somehow there are more people nowadays who eat out so that there were many cars driving around yesterday. It is a bit strange as I still remember that Dec24th was a really silent night only 7 or 8 years ago when I walked to my grandma who lived about 1km away (remember - no buses around after 16:00 XD) and there were virtually no cars traveling around at all.

The 24th is christmas eve and 25th is christmas day.

Merry christmas is notmally used on the day but u wouldnt be out of place sayin it on the eve.
