Schweinsteiger is #1 by far, but then comes Marchisio in my opinion.

Well in the last 4 years he's had over 10 goals and 15 assists in 3 of those 4 years while being riddled with injuries. Dude, look at my posts on this page I said his defense was lacking but he is exceptional in all other facets of being a midfielder. It's like you can't be complete on this thread unless you are a semi DM, I just don't think thats right. I would rather have a guy who will put up huge goal and assist numbers and has incredible link up play from the back to the front and dictates the tempo of the game and is not a great defender because he's exceptional at 4/5 things. There's a reason most teams play with a DM destroyer because one player can't do everything in midfield.

Well thats the point of this thread,you have to be a semi DM at the same time you have to be very good going in attacking contribution too.Basically Box to box midfielders.

If you are including Fab as complete players by ignoring his lack of defending it will be unfair to LOT of players out there..

That's your opinion but not everyones. Teams ask different things of there midfielders and not all are set out to do the same job. For instance I like a midfielder to have good assist and scoring numbers because IMO the most effective formation will have a DM behind him to take care of the defending. Everyone's taste is different and teams play differently. Just because a guy like Cesc plays a little further up the field then Bastian doesn't mean he can't be on this list. Bastian does certain things way better then Cesc and Cesc does certain things way better then Bastian, one formula is not better then the other because they are asked to do different things yet they are both midfielders.

But I disagree with those mentioning Pirlo. Not complete IMO.

When you're talking about most complete midfielder its without a doubt Gerrard.

When we're talking about best most complete mf atm,then its Schweinstieger,De Rossi followed by Vidal and Marchisio.

Surprised noone has mentioned the thug, Roy Keane (But I suppose all the United fans are in hybernation mode after that game ... who can blame them lol). Okay so sure, you might say that he didnt offer as much in the creative dept, but maybe that was due to how United played in the early 2000s. Keane's off the ball movement, positioning/defending/ enforcing (hockey reference... dont know what you call that type of player in football) and his passing skills were top notch and certainly underrated... maybe not WC but almost in that category imo. Either way, he has got to be in the list.

2004-2009 Gerrard is twice more complete than anyone mentioned in this thread.

A fit Gerrard for me is the most complete midfielder in the world.

How can Pirlo be complete? His offensive midfield-role is unmatched, but his lack of pace makes him a not-so-good tackler, also shown recently by a late tackle on Lavezzi, resulting in a penalty to Napoli. Pirlo is obviously GOD, but his defense is not that great, just saying.

Current generation : Definitely schweinsteiger.

But in the last generation it was Gerrard. There should not be any debate about that.

Gerrard is up there even with his age. In the past 5 years he's been the best IMO. He can defend, shoot, attack, pass, tackle, head, lead, score, dribble....he can do it all.

Destroys, distributes (long balls, through balls, everything), can attack and defend pretty much whatever one can possibly do. If shooting is a requirement then we have to give him more time to collect goals. But he is complete as it gets already, and I pray every day that he doesnt deceive wenger and leave arsenal
