I think he's come leaps and bounds considering he left Gremio as a more attacking mid.

I never fail to be a bit amazed seeing Lucas winning physical battles with the likes of Yaya Toure and keeping players of Silva's ability quiet... The lad is everything that's right with the game.

Lucas was amazing today. Like, actually amazing.

Stats:
Passes attempted 75
Passes completed 69
Success rate 92%

Tackles attempted 11
Tackles won 11

That's split into:

Duels won (aerial) 5/5
Duels won (tackle) 6/6

I wouldn't swap him with any other central midfielder in the premier league.

He was indeed a beast today.

Just shows how any decent midfield can shatter ManC's.

Probably the same people that think Anderson deserves a call up... Lucas is only one of the most reliable starters for Liverpool and Brazil's National Team. Somehow, that makes him absolute rubbish  .

I think he could be a successor to Gerrard as Liverpool's captain.

If he can over-come the fitness issues. Lucas & Reina are perhaps the first names on team-sheet.

De Jong, Busquets, M'Vila, Mascherano (when he plays there), De Rossi and then Lucas Leiva. Song is right there too. Busquets and De Rossi are the best. I'm only considering guys that play a pure DM. There are a ton of other defensive B2Bs that i'm obviously not considering here...

That's good, because that's the role Lucas plays. I'm sick of seeing the main criticism of Lucas being his goal scoring ability. That isn't the role he's been asked to play. Evil or Very Mad

While you are correct about Busquets, De Jong is undisciplined and dangerous (see 2010 World cup final and Hatem Ben Arfa's leg for evidence). I haven't watched enough of De Rossi to make any statement on him. M'Villa is wonderful, but he is still young and yet to be truly tested outside of Ligue 1. I grant that he has looked good for the French NT, but I'm eager to see what he can do in one of the "top" leagues.

A year ago, I would have agreed with you about Mascherano. However, after a year of watching Lucas hold the midfield, I find myself forgetting that Masch was ever there. In addition, I think Lucas's distribution is better than Masch's. Did you watch the Man City game? Any time Reina fielded the ball without pressure, you saw Agger and Skrtel split wide and Lucas came back to receive the pass and bring the ball forward. This aspect of his game was further highlighted by Liverpool 4-1-4-1 formation, and is precisely what made this change of tactic effective.

As for Song, he's certainly been essential for Arsenal this campaign, providing stability and experience for the midfield. However, I don't see him controlling matches in the same way that Lucas does. He often seems to be forced to hang on as the club is driven by Van Persie, Arteta and Walcott. In the absence of Gerrard, Lucas is often the driving force in midfield for Liverpool. It is a difficult aspect of his game to describe. I suppose the best descriptors are poise and leadership. It's something that I personally don't see in Song.
