Anyone else noticed the lost, young adolescent in this series, going off to find himself in the wilderness (John Snow) has a fat, innocent, but friendly companion named Sam... LOTR?
Except Frodo and Sam are bitches...soft as f*ck the both of them
In this case only Sam is soft...Jon Snow is boss

Tyrion keeping the show afloat.
Rob Stark- Doctor girl dialogue was good.
Rob Stark- Doctor girl dialogue was good.
- Spoiler:
- I could live with the dragons but this birthing of demons and stuff , I'm not buying it man. Fantasy is fantasy I get it , but one of the best things about it is the realism. Diluting it with too much elements of complete non-realism kinda takes the fun out of it for me.
Dragons are fun catchy creatures, for some reason they ruin the realism....introduction of some demon god stuff will. They've done a great job on keeping us suspended on the wildings.
Also, right now Geoffery being a spoilt child has gone from being a decent caricature to mildly annoying watching sutch a flat charachter be given such a huge role and so much power.
He needs to die.
Letting Arya become Taiwin's servant is a interesting sub plot.
Perhaps the people who have read the books understand all this alot better but whatever.

Completely agree with you (re: spoiler). I was a bit disappointed in that as well. Realism is really important in fantasy, the more bs you try to put in the harder it is to relate to the human elements. That's why the White Walkers work, because they are kept in the background, like a myth... its suspenseful and doesn't detract from the main plot.
Defs not digging the Red Lady or Stannis atm. The Qarth city is a bit too much for me too...

"shadows", as they are called on the book, are never very prominent.

if you are a fan of fantasy, or a writer of it [like myself] u'll understand that reality has no bearing on fantasy.
The beauty of fantasy is its ability to distance itself from realism hence very good writers of fantasy were faced with certain problems in their childhood, lifetime, past time etc and the only way to survive or distance themselves from it was their ability to create unimaginable worlds with unreal characters. In this world they find solace, and though to the realist reader these worlds mar the story line, it is these unreal places characters/ places that the author intends to help u appreciate.
The appearance of a demon god could be an un-pleasantry in Martin's life, a factor of worldly wrong he detests or a hidden power which he sees the world bowing to in disregard of orthodox beliefs.
While we fantasy writers come in different qualities and have different ranges of presenting our schemes, it would be harsh of me to assume what Martin's intentions are but I would still say, I personally watch GOT for the mystic factors like the:
Red Lady, Wildings, White Walkers, the wolves with the Stark children etc.
These elements will always be a part of great fantasy works as evident
trolls, Gondor, Rivendell, Gandalf, Hobbits, Elves, Sarun and Morgoth, the Valar, fires of Mount Doom, the Dunedain, Ring Wraiths etc in Tolkein's LOTR
Narnia, the White Witch, Aslan, all the mythical creatures in C.S Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia
Hogwarts, magic, Voldemort, spells, Hogwarts Express, Hippogriffs (not sure of spelling) etc etc in JK Rowling's Harry Potter, so u see, this elements have always been an element of good fantasy works.
I haven't read any of Martin's GOT books, am just a follower of the TV series but I can tell u Qarth might be a his imagined land of rich, peaceful and "maybe" honest haven where only the pure are entertained, perhaps the appearance of dragons there might be for good or an omen to the land [I cannot tell since I haven't read the book]

Re: Game of Thrones
I understand that, but this show has kept touch with reality throughout and placed much emphasis on the human elements.
Just like Harry Potter kept the core concepts of the buildinngrosman intact.
I get what you're saying though, I'm not knocking fantasy but I know television and film, and in shows like this it's neccesary to keep touch with reality and don't let fantasy elements take over. They can exist but they should not be the spotlight.

Yeah, that came out of frakking nowhere. Just an excuse to show titties, IMO.
Was more a linking sort of episode, not much meat, but still good.

- Spoiler:
- Nothing to explain really, Melisandre is skilled with magic, she's priestess and that's one of her tricks, shadow assassins. I don't mind her, w/o her and Davos, Stannis would be paint dry boring.
If you think it's ridiculous, wait until you see Danny force later on.

I know what you mean but to me, magic in GOT does indeed take a back seat, its role is to make things a bit more flavor. The main point is still political power struggle. Martins really tried to stay away from those fantasy cliche as much as possible. He set up and follow his own rules, quite unusual in fantasy genre where popular series like The sword of truth, The wheel of time bend their own rules, creating deus ex machina one after another.

Re: Game of Thrones
Honestly Josh I think you're overreacting. It was one scene, fantasy didn't take over people stories. The drama part of the equation is still very much the center of the show.

Re: Game of Thrones
It's probable.
I was awake for about 26 hours when I decided to watch those last 2 epsiodes, I lose patience when I'm tired.
Still it's those kinda snippets of fantasy which make me wish they never cancelled Rome.I like GOT alot and I'm sure i'll like the books even more but I'm still bitter about HBO cancelling Rome because it cost too much to make then dropping almost twice as much on Game of thrones.
