I already substitute popcorn for at least two meals a week... I shall survive.Sushi Master wrote:But... but then you can get the popcorn anytime you like!magpie wrote:Sushi Master wrote:Don't they show them through the online HBO channel?magpie wrote:Oi, if I wanted spoilers I'd ask.alfredandrew wrote:Yeah... Winter better come soon, dammit, I only have access to HBO through a friend... and for like 6 more months...
Also, there are... other ways
I think you have to sign up for the online stuff... and yes, there is always pirating. Sometimes, though, I like being able to shit down five minutes before the show with a bowl of popcorn and not have to worry about torrenting it.

Lol, my apologies

No worries. I've never been the one to care about spoilers. Plus the gf has been reading them while she was away and we've been comparing notes. Things are bound to get spoiled.alfredandrew wrote:magpie wrote:Oi, if I wanted spoilers I'd ask.alfredandrew wrote:Yeah... Winter doesn't come for like 4 books lolll.

Re: Game of Thrones
Episode 8 is probably the best one by far, GRRM wrote the script himself. So intense, although the sword fight left something to be desired

Yeah, but it just confirms my theory that nice people south of the wall are going to die. Period. End of story. They have to do something mean spirited to survive.Twoism wrote:Episode 8 is probably the best one by far, GRRM wrote the script himself. Re: Game of Thrones
That's really my only problem so far. It has been kind of predictable in who dies and who lives. Or maybe that is just me. I love the series as a whole, definitely the feudal aspect of it, but I know that Dany is going to have to undergo some change soon... or she will not make it to season 2.

Re: Game of Thrones
Don't want to spoil you but out of all characters Dany will surprise you the most. There are still other honorable men around they just don't fit well with King's Landing and the cunning of house Lannisters. Like you said, GRRM loves to kill off the characters at their peak where readers root for them the most.
I just watched couple of eps of Camelot and The Borgias, gotta see bad to appreciate the good.

Re: Game of Thrones
I assumed something would happen (or why bring up the Targaryen's story at all?). If he didn't plan for her to be something... he would have used any number of other elements to drive the Dothraki to Westeros. This is an expansion of the idea of Chekhov's Gun.
For those of you who are not in the know, Chekhov's Gun is an assumption that because an item was mentioned, it is important. If the author goes through the trouble to describe something or show you something they means to do something with it. In film this is a bit different, but the idea is basically the same: if the director makes a big deal out of something it is important. It seems like common sense, but almost always in hindsight. By the way, if you apply this: you'll ruin every Encyclopedia Brown book ever...
The previews leave little to imagination of a writer.

Re: Game of Thrones
Good one sir to mention Chekhov's gun, "if you want to learn how to write short stories, read Chekhov" can't remember who said that.
You are right but I guess the element of surprise is "how" in this case. Anyways, I would say by the end of the series if they carry on til the final book, GOT will go down as one of the best among The Wire, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos

Re: Game of Thrones
LOL ASOIAF has been called many thing but predictable is not one of them
Sure you know certain characters will do certain things, but you don't know the twists and turns it will take to get there.

It's much harder to spot anything predictable in the book than the tv series though so that might be what he means, in the tv series.

Re: Game of Thrones
Really? I find it exactly the opposite. Let's say you're reading a passage in a book where it describes a room and it makes note that one of the many portraits in the room resembles the visitor, foreshadowing that perhaps the person who owns this room and the person who is visiting the room are related. In a series, the portrait would be in the background but there would be nothing to differentiate it from the other ones in the room. It's just another portrait.

Re: Game of Thrones
I'm talking about grand scheme not exposition, one hour episode the viewers will have firm view of what has happened and what might be. In the book since it's POV, you follow one person's agenda only, some less interesting than others, I tend to lose focus on some characters, Cersei is good for laugh but her story is just too crazy, almost comic relief.
Also visual does help. For example, Joffrey the incest son - you have the hair, the facial expression from Ned, Tyrion. Or the symbolism of Tywin skinning that stag. Littlefinger in the book was a lots more interesting as well but the brothel in episode 7 almost sum him up entirely.

Re: Game of Thrones
If you handn't read the books before watching the TV series... it would be different
I say it's easier predicting something written than something visual, just because you have tons more time to digest the information, and can be more detailed than in visual form.
The opposite happened to me with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I watched the movies before reading the books. The books are just on another level, even with the godly movies showing you most things.

Re: Game of Thrones
LotR was interesting, I read through them in grade school and in doing so probably missed a lot. I skipped a lot of stuff because I was on deadlines with reports and stuff. I feel that reading class ruined reading for me because it turned reading (something I used to love) into work.
Now I have a ton of trouble reading anything longer than a few pages. The last actual book I read was Yahtzee's Mogworld. I'd prefer to write.

Re: Game of Thrones
So what did you guys think of the last episode?
I'm kind of disappointed they didn't actually show the battles, or gave us Rob's masterplan beforehand. Although I suppose that with a TV budget that would have been asking for too much (Rome also cut to the end of the battles rather than showing them).

I thought there way of skipping over the battle was clever and quite funny
Although I DO think they should have at least explained Robbs plan
Maybe I missed it, but did they even mention what went on there? It sort of seemed like they just cut to Robb capturing Jaime Lannister without even mentioning the circumstances surrounding the capture or Robbs plan at all
Missed the boat a little there imo
