Dan Agger For Captaincy

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers will decide which Liverpool player succeeds the retired Jamie Carragher as the club's vice-captain before pre-season concludes.


Pre-season gets underway for Rodgers and his team against Preston North End on Saturday, with live coverage of the friendly available on LFC TV Online.

The Northern Irishman has yet to appoint a deputy for skipper Steven Gerrard since Carragher called time on his career at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

Rodgers revealed that several members of his squad are under consideration for the role, before stressing the importance of the position on and off the pitch.

"I haven't made it yet; there are a few people that I'm looking at," the boss told Liverpoolfc.com when asked if a vice-captain had been selected.

"The captain and vice-captain is a very important position here at the football club, on and off the field.

"We've got a number of players that I'm looking at and assessing before I'll make that decision at the end of pre-season."

I am waiting for Red's word, as I take solace & example from what he says on these situations the most.

At the moment, I am more sickened than how I was about Fernando Torres. He has taken us for a ride, he has disrespected all of what he honoured. We should have seen this coming. We didn't.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers does not expect Daniel Agger to be leaving the club this summer.

Agger has been linked with a summer move, and Spanish giants Barcelona are one of those who are reportedly keen on the Dane.

Speaking to the Scandinavian media ahead of Liverpool's friendly with Valerenga on Wednesday, Rodgers insisted that he does not expect Agger to be leaving Anfield.

"This is all about loyalty," Rodgers told a press conference.

"He's obviously a world-class defender. Daniel is very committed to Liverpool; he's one of the players that have really impressed me.

"He gave me his word that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be at Liverpool. He has never swayed from that."

"If we're talking about loyalty, he was one of the first players that I spoke to when I became the manager. At the time, there were a number of big clubs looking to sign Daniel.

"But he gave me his word that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be at Liverpool. He has never swayed from that.

"He has an unswerving commitment to Liverpool which is so refreshing. His loyalty to the club is incredible.

"I would suspect when he signed his new contract last year, he was hoping that this would be the contract that's going to allow him to see out the best part of his career at Liverpool."

Agger's defensive colleague Martin Skrtel has also been linked with a move away from the club, and has been tipped to join Rafa Benitez at Napoli.
