Downing central? I think he is actually a better WINGER than Young. I think this would be ideal:

-----------------------Hart---------------------
Jonno-------Terry--------Ferdy------Cole
--------------Wilshere--Gerrard------------
------------------------------------------------
---Young----------Rooney-----------Downing-
-------------------Bent/Carroll

I don't agree with Johnson, right now he may be better than Smalling, but Smalling keeps getting better, Johnson seems to get worse.

Joe cole instead of walcott. In fact anyone instead of walcott, or play with 10 men, just anything except watching walcott run the ball out play/run into his opponent/kick the ball into the crowd

Apart from that your team is right, best england have at the moment. Gerrard and walcott can be impact subs

You're right, atm Walcott is crap - but I think it's just a bad form, let's see if he keeps playing this way, I hope not.

Why do everyone have Rooney right upfront. Rooney likes to drop deep into midfield. You need him behind a front man to be effective. He is the best England have as a false 9.

I see different formations but how many of those guys have actually played those formations day in and day out at their clubs?

England Starting XI AbCekq5am9
Alongside Terry Micah Richards IS THE BEST BET. Terry needs a quick intelligent player next to him to cover. Rio Ferdinand has performed this role in the past for England, but his creaky knees count him out as an effective and reliable “get out of jail” man. Micah Richards has the physicality and pace required to do this job. Also, as a player who is primarily used as a right back, he’s more comfortable on the ball, and will be useful playing out from defence.

Wayne Rooney plays in the attacking position where Lampard at Chelsea, Sneijder at Internazionale, and Mesut Ozil plays for Real Madrid. This might seem strange, to play England’s current best attacker in midfield, but here he will get involved in the play as much as he likes to – and Ferguson has experimented with him here recently too. Rooney’s all-round game is about so much more than getting on the end of things, and like Sneijder and Ozil he can orchestrate things from this advanced midfield position.

Up front, Ashley Young and James Milner play on the flanks, and would interchange to keep opposition full backs. Both wingers would be asked to drift infield and try to drag their markers in to give Cole and Walker space to exploit behind.

Andy Carroll plays as the target man. Carroll is the type of player to relentlessly battle a defence, and keep two centre-backs occupied all day long.

Barry, Downing, Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Parker, Walcott, Young
Carroll, Defoe, Rooney, Welbeck

Full squad.

Personally, I'd have selected Richards over Jones, just purely on form alone. Downing being in is a bit of a shock, but I guess he's our only left footed winger other than Johnson and Young will probably start on that side anyway.

No Carrick is a disappointment. I thought he deserved a chance.

Other than that, it's about what I expected. No combination of players was going to make me excited about this tournament. We're just going to have to make do with what we have.

Seems like the most likely starting eleven, Nick. Gerrard has been made captain, so he's definitely starting. Only questions are whether we'll be playing 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 and who will be replacing Rooney for the first two games.

How is it any different to previous England squads, really? Only technical player missing is Wilshere and maybe Johnson and Sturridge. Apart from that, it's pretty much the same squad as always.
