Terraria & Starbound
Most of you have heard of Minecraft, I assume. For those that haven't, Minecraft is a 3D sandbox game game made by indie developer Mojang. It is based around blocks of materials that can be moved and craft to create vast and imaginative structures.
That isn't the game this thread is about, though. This thread is about Terraria, a 2D game made by Re-Logic. At first glance, Terraria resembles a 2D version of Minecraft. It also has an environment made out of block of materials which can be harvested and crafted to made just about any type of building you can imagine. HOWEVER, Terraria is also much more than that. Terraria incorporates elements of RPG's and platformer/action games into the basic sandbox set-up. There are NPC's that will move into your world once you have achieved certain goals and many more enemies to fight than in Minecraft, including several bosses (3 currently, but more coming). There are several "biomes" spread throughout the worlds that range from a hell-like Underworld with skeletal serpents and demons to floating islands with buildings made of gold and harpies. Terraria also includes a massive number of craft-able weapons for fighting off the monsters and bosses throughout the worlds.
Further, the game is constantly being updated and added to, with all updates being free-of-charge. In fact, 1.1 is set to come out in early to mid December and will dramatically increase the scope and challenge of the game, with several new biomes, bosses, and other additions. Many of these started off as suggestions from fans, as the developers regularly communicate with the fan-base via forums and IRC chat and are very receptive to input. For instance, there is a mace being added in 1.1 that was created solely at the request of one of the forum-users.
The game also supporters multi-player, though it is a bit hard to set up as you need the IP address of the person hosting it. The only other real issue is that it can be hard to know what to do when you're just starting out, but a quick google fixes that easily. Don't let the graphics and minecraft-ness fool you, it is a fantastic game and well worth a look, especially if you can find it on-sale on Steam (I got my copy for $2).

Maybe we should set up a Goal Legacy server? Maybe be fun to play with more people than just Red and our flat mate.

I'm not up to date with its current status, does it have linux server binaries yet? If so I own a vps I can use if it's not too resource intensive.

Re: Terraria & Starbound
On sale for 50% off on Steam right now. I'd recommend anyone considering it go for it now while it's cheap, since there is a massive, massive update coming on Dec 1.

"Stop what you're doing immediately - we have very important news - TERRARIA IS COMING TO XBLA & PSN WITH BRAND NEW CONTENT"
No idea what the new content is yet but I hope it's made available to PC users as well.

I need some new material to play before AC III comes out so I'll have a look at this.

Haven't played this in so long, have there been many updates over the past year?

Re: Terraria & Starbound
No, the development team split up so there haven't been updates since 1.1 back in January.
Have a look at Starbound, though. The spriter (and perhaps another member) from the Terraria team has moved to that group and it looks like it could be the spiritual heir to Terraria when it's released.

Ah right, that does look quite nice and definitely looks very similar visually.

Re: Terraria & Starbound
So, Starbound seems to be progressing steadily... very excited for it from the videos I've seen and content that's been mentioned.
Also, Terraria's rights were bought by a different company a few months back for porting to consoles, so it should be available with new content on XboxLive and PSN soon. As of yesterday one of the original developers also hinted that new content (i.e. an update) may finally be in the works for PC users as well.

Re: Terraria & Starbound
Computer update confirmed by Redigit (one of the original developers). He seems extremely excited and has suggested it will dwarf previous updates in size (other than 1.1).

More information is steadily coming out about Starbound as well... that game looks absurdly deep if/when it eventually gets completed.

Have you preordered it?
I'm fairly keen for the beta, it's looking really good.

Yeah I saw that those numbers are crazy, it doesn't even seem like it's been marketed all that much.
