The introduction of the voting of the annual The World‘s best Goalkeeper (by the IFFHS) and the annual world rankings of goalkeepers offered a more objective basis from 1987. This gives a more precise way of determining the world‘s best goalkeeper but only since 1987. The determination of The World‘s best Goalkeeper for the Quarter of a Century (1987-1911) was carried out analogous as those of The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the 1st Decade, so there is a uniform system for the future.

From the annual world ranking of the goalkeepers (as a result of the world vote) the IFFHS will take into consideration the "Top 20" for each year and allocate points to each place. So the first-placed receives 20 points, the second-placed 19 points, the third-placed 18 points ... and a point for twentieth place. If the annual world ranking comprises more than 20 goalkeepers, then the goalkeepers from 21st place onwards receive no points. If the annual world ranking comprises fewer than 20 goalkeepers (based on the fixed rules), no points will be awarded for the unoccupied palces. Adding the points from the individual years provides a world ranking for the period 1987-2011. The first-placed goalkeeper of this final ranking for the period is The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the Quarter of a Century (1987-2011).

Anniversary victor still open !

After 24 of the 25 years the three top-placed goalkeepers can still in theory become the overall winner and with it The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the Quarter of a Century (1987-2011). But if the Italian Gianluigi Buffon finishes among the "Top 19" in the voting for The World‘s best Goalkeeper 2011, then 1st place will be beyond the Dutchman Edwin van der Sar. The decision about the overall winner would then be between the two world champions and many times World‘s best Goalkeepers "Gigi" Buffon and Iker Casillas. The positions of the two other many times World‘s best Goalkeepers, the Dane Peter Schmeichel (4th) and the German Oliver Kahn (5th), in the The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the Quarter of a Century are already certain, although both goalkeepers are no longer active.

The best-placed South American and three times World‘s best Goalkeeper José Luis Félix Chilavert from Paraguay (6th) can still be passed by the Czech Petr Čech. The goalkeepers in positions 8 to 16 are known for certain as none of them are still active. But those goalkeepers presently in 17th and below can still be passed by the Spaniard Víctor Valdés and the Brazilian Julio César. Currently, with 24 world votes completed, a total of 140 goalkeepers from all football continents could be placed in the resultant world ranking, with six new goalkeepers likely to be placed in the annual world ranking.

And the list is from the past 24 years not 25, the 25 year list is not yet out.

Blame the people that vote every year lmao

The votes, were cast by IFFHS's editorial staff as well as experts from 89 countries spanning six different continents.
