Doe's anyone else hate how attacking defenders get so much praise and thier faults are constantly ignored?

Players like Phil Jones, Pique, Maicon, Baines, Cahill etc etc

All get ridiculously hyped because they are easy on the eye by either creating goals or scoring goals but people ignore the fact they make constant defensive mistakes and it really annoys me defenders are suppose to do just that defend !!!!!

I bet if i studied Varane closely enough i could find major defensive mistakes in his game which are ignored because some fanboy says.......

ZOMG HE'S A DEFENDER WHO CAN PASS THE BALL AND BUILT LIKE ZIDANE ZOMG Rolling Eyes

Note: I didnt discuss Alves because everyone knows he sucks defensively Very Happy

Anyway what are your feelings on the subject?......

No player has been able to successfully dribble past Varane in 270 consecutive minutes. Jus' sayin.

Also the players you mentioned are more solid than most defenders when they are not attacking bar Cahill.

TS is the most complete defender, he can be a Zidane if he wants to.

Verm is good in both attacking and defending

I am talking about defenders with great attacking talent but cant really defend lol and how it gets ignored.....

Mole the maldini's and nesta's are a dying breed.

Even defenders are expected to be good on the ball these day and be a threat, the game is changing.

To be honest i cant think of many pure class defenders playin nowadays

And to everyone who keeps mentioning verm honestly im a gunners fan and the guys barely even plays he plays one match then boom injured for a few months we can hardly call him wc or watever else ive seen bandied around here.

Barely seen him string a couple of games together let alone against top opposition to be callin him anywhere near wc

Pique has defensive woes? Did not notice except his concentration is lacking. Otherwise I think he is a VERY solid defender...

Of course i understand that but there also defenders that are great going forward but good defensively aswell....

This thread is aimed at the players that a good going forward but make mistakes consistently and are constantly ignored due to the fact they are easy on the eye.

fullbacks are a different story imo,if your going to use a player like Alves,its obviously because you want his attacking and passing qualities,his defensive attributes are in the background.

Can think of Bale when he played LB) Still was hyped, despite being raped. Vargas when played LB, same. Van Buyten, sometimes forgotten to be mentioned how horrible this player is. And ofcourse, your favourite Marcelo

I agree with Ganso that fullbacks and centre backs are a different story. Some uses attacking fullbacks (for example, Maicon, Alves and Marcelo) just becouse they tend to add another dimension to your attack. Madrid has issues for example to get the ball out from the backline without Marcelo and Marcelo has shown that he has a very important role in Real Madrids attack.

Same could be said about Alves, he is even a core player in Barcas system.

Centrebacks should always be solid defensively IMO.

Vargas was a flop at left-back.Simply put.He was almost signed by Fenerbahce after flopping in his first season with Viola in 2008-09 so i dont know where you got the hype factor from.

It was only when Prandelli deployed him as a left winger in the subsequent season that he put in a string of impressive perfomances which led to him being linked to the likes of Real Madrid.He never really excelled as a Full-Back in my opinion.

He plays as a left winger for Chile too.

Well theres always gonna be fans supportin or biggin up
One of there players even if there mistake prone.

I mean look at ferdi quality defender when he wants to be but had serious lapses of concentration but 2 years ago anything other than ferdi best defender in the world was blasphemy.

Vermalean an example as well regarding how much my fellow gunnrrs supporters rate him.

I know there not attackin defenders but hope u see my point, people will always be there to defend and make excuses for there teams players.

Honestly i cant think of a defender that is a good at defending as he is attackin.

Only player i can think of right now due to his Impressive performances for juve is lichsteiner has done very well in both areas, very solid signing so far

Chiellini, if you watched the Juventus - Milan game, is an example of a great defender (first) who can also contribute to attack (as a secondary responsibility).

Stephan Lichtsteiner also does this

Hugo Campagnaro also does this

Cristian Maggio, who is now more of a MF than an SB, is still excellent in defending.

Thiago Silva goes without saying

Patrice Evra in his heyday was a monster on both sides of the ball.

The problem with most of the players you mention in the OP is that their defensive frailties are masked by the fact that the team they play for achieve success. I disagree about Pique though... he is just World Class plain and simple.

Furthermore, with the examples you mentioned (and i know, as you said, i cant hold you responsible for knowing/mentioning every single player relative to the topic), youth and inexperience play a major role in the way they handle their defensive duties. A lot of these players, once they master the art of balance, could be equally as effective on both sides of the ball (see: Thiago Silva).

The most annoying of the lot is Maicon, who 2 years ago was rated as the best player in the world...
