Qatar 2022 could cost £138bn
The cost of hosting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is expected to reach £138 billion - with £28 billion alone spent on creating a new city which will host the opening match and the final.
Lusail will be built in the East of Qatar, with the football stadium the focal point, 15 km north of Doha. The website set-up for the city - www.lusail.com - states that "the aim is to establish a distinctive 21st century iconic city which celebrates the special cultural and geographical heritage of Qatar and the Gulf Region". It will have a population of 200,000.
Dr Nicola Ritter, a German legal and financial analyst, told an investors' summit held in Munich that of the £138 billion cost, stadiums and facilities would carry a bill of £107 billion while transport infrastructure would amount to £31 billion.
The cost of air-conditioning 12 stadia will be around £30 billion, with a further £48 billion allocated for training facilities and accommodation for players and fans.
Transport improvements include expanding the New Doha International Airport and constructing the new Doha port where it is planned some fans will be accommodated on cruise ships, according to a report in Construction News.
At present the port is due for completion in 2023, but schedules will be brought forward in time for the World Cup finals.

The Doha metro rail link is due to be open by 2015 but is running behind.

They will never be getting that money back. Qatar doesn't even have the infrastructure nor manpower to accomodate as many fans as any decent sized country would.
They might as well make 8 stadiums, side by side, in a closed area with ACs up the ass. We'd get the WC in June, and people could concentrate con the capital instead of "oh, here is a prop city just made to support this stadium".

South Africa spent £40bn for the 2010 World Cup and didn't come close to recouping the money. Qatar has no chance with £138bn.

I don't think most of you really understand the mindset in the region when it comes to spending money on things regardless if they're high ranking officials or just normal people. If you have guests you make sure you get the best available to you in order to come off in the best light.
The price tag doesn't really matter to Qatar (notice how I said Qatar and not the fantastically ignorant stereotype of sheik) so long as the tournament's a success. Honestly people should be happy that Qatar are putting a lot of effort and attention to the event when other countries would not have given this much importance.

it's not like the people of Qatar decided that their country should host the WC or that foreign atheltes should be given qatari citizenship and paid huge amounts of money in order to represent qatar in international competitions(despite still not winning anything worthy!!)..
so yes, it's the stupid sheiks calling the shots and not the qatari people, so don't pretend to be smarter than the rest of us because you're not...

then this is a stupid mindset. im not trying to sound like a tree hugger here but people in sumalia are literally starving to death, imagine what %1 of this money can do to them, but Qatar rather spend to air condition the desert and build staduims that are never gonna be used after the world cup !

Re: Qatar 2022 could cost £138bn
I'm sorry but that's bullshit as an argument.
Picking on Qatar for not donating that money is stupid, especially when other countries spend a lot of money on other things that is not related to donations.
What is happening is Somalia is horrible but we should all do our part as individuals instead of just pointing at other places and blame them for something in all honesty they don't even have to do.
I'm not saying what Qatar is doing is the right thing but at the same time it's their money and they can do what they want with it.
@Fadi
I'm not smarter than anyone, but I'm less ignorant than you. Do you even know what Sheik means? Some of the guys calling the shots are not Sheiks at all. Some Sheik having nothing to do with decision making. So stop with the stereotypes or saves us from reading your posts until further notice.

Not gonna recoup anywhere near that amount, prob not even 1/20th of that amount.
Going to be laughing hard when all that oil money runs out (But the way things are going they will have bought everything up by then lol)

Isn't the biggest hurdle of this World Cup going to be making the country an accomadating place for the torists and players? If spending £138bn is what it takes to overcome that, then who are we to complain? It's not like this money is coming out of own pockets or anything like that.

Re: Qatar 2022 could cost £138bn
Jealousy is rampant. I didn't think Qatar alone should have gotten the WC (thought it would be better if it was shared by Qatar and UAE for example). However, the utter bs that is spewed on this board is ignorant, shameful and racist.

if we're going the "its their money they can spend it how they like" arguement then i've got nothing else to add, but this isnt ethical, especially if the money is spent to entertain europeans and show them than arabs are not as bad as they think they are. this is how the spending is driven, by an infiriority complex and nothing else
