The majority of Arsenal’s players and staff are now away for the summer, but work is still going on behind the scenes ahead for next season. Here are some of the stories you might have missed.
Arsenal will not be opening their pre-season with the traditional run out against Barnet. The Bees confirmed today that the money spinning fixture will not be going ahead, and hinted that it is unlikely to be revived. The game has always been a way of saying ‘thanks’ for allowing the Reserves use of Underhill, but with most games now behind closed doors at the training ground, the club have felt there is no need for the friendly.
While the Barnet game won’t take place, Arsenal will be sending a Reserve and Youth XI to face Dover Athletic, Hastings and Boreham Wood. The official website is expected to confirm dates and times shortly.
In internationals, Ryo Miyaichi’s hopes of winning a work permit took another dent when he was removed from the Japan Under 22 squad. Miyaichi was initially selected for the clash against Australia, but the JFA have since updated the squad and said: “now is not the right time to include Ryo”.
Henri Lansbury, Kieran Gibbs and Ignasi Miquel were all in action for their country yesterday, while Emi Martínez was on the bench for Argentina against Wojciech Szczęsny’s Poland.
In contract news, Zak Ansah has signed professional terms, while George Brislen-Hall has signed a new one year deal following the release of Thomas Cruise. Brislen-Hall was due to leave the club in July, but has now signed on for another year, after Cruise left. The club are also set to open talks with Henri Lansbury over an extension.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Miyaichi looks less likely to gain a work permit, which I guess adds more evidence that Gervinho could be signing with us soon!

Miyaichi was bound to not gain a work permit since if i recall correctly he has to feature in 70% of NT over 2 years :S

But weren't we all hoping he'd get the permit under the special talent category???

He still can, but the criteria for this is very vague and Arsenal can only apply for one visa a year. So it's a toss up between Miyaichi, Wellington and Galindo.
I'm genuinely surprised Miyaichi has been left out of the U22 squad.

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
So if you were to pick, would you rather take Miyachi, Galindo or Wellington to London? Good question to ponder. I'd rather let Wellington come to England and then farm him out in the championship or something. Miyachi would do well with another year at Feyenoord.
We are also looking at a deal with Anderlecht for player-swap-loans, I hear. That would be another interesting option.

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
Out of the three, Miyaichi is more ready for first team action at Arsenal and could probably play a role in the squad in my opinion. Wellington is far from being ready as is Galindo.
Having said that, I'd send all three out on loan again. Miyaichi can spend another year in Feyenoord to further refine his skills, while Wellington should go to a club that has a very professional environment and values young players; right now Wellington's biggest weakness is that he's not very professional and hasn't been guided to become so. Galidno just needs to go somewhere he can play regularly - Salamanca hardly used him.

Same here
Ryo would be the only would be able to breakthrough into the first team.
Wellington hasn't played many games and I've heard he has a very bad attitude and Galidno ... needs a better team.

What of Vela? I really think we should bring him back and give him a decent shot. Its saddening to see his case really! Him and Javier Hernandez look like a repeat of Reyes and Ronaldo. We get the potentially better player but MU gets more shot at the goods. While our potentially lethal player gets wasted.

Vela won't flourish in a 4-3-3 system so as long as AW keeps employing 4-3-3 we might never see him reach his true potential in an Arsenal shirt .

Its the same problem that Bendtner ran into. When Vela played, he was put on the wing.

TBH I'm with AW on this he can't risk to change his formation to accommodate Vela .... too risky eh?

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
Not just for Vela, but to change our style itself maybe? Everyone knows how to beat our game now! Defend, defend, defend, defend, set-piece goal, voila.
Good defenses expose our lack of creativity and clinicality in front of goal, and we throw more and more forward, nobody back minding the shop, counter attack, some clumsy fool gives away a set-piece, and the other team scores.
If we did switch to another system, and get a good pre-season with it, we'd probably work around this. And probably, it would suit Vela more. Heres to hope!

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
You have a point nowadays we are very very predictable we rarely shoot and all our play comes from our wingers they take the ball and cross which isn't even arsenal-style!
But changing the style itself has it's risks and since we are 7 years wothout a trophy I think it's an unneeded risk that shouldn't be taken.
We should focus on defending set pieces and try different styles which can bring the Vela we know in CC games.

We need our forwards to work harder to get in to space, that would work.

I still think we should implement elements of the 4-4-2 of the invincibles era.. We haven't won squat, maybe the risk is worth it?

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
It's not worth it with Fabregas playing still, that free role is what makes him the player he is.
It's an idea to try 4-4-2 when he's not playing, but you can't be sure the players would adapt to a formation change every other week well.

Precisely, changing formation would hit our consistency. That is the con of multiple formations.

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
Changing our formation would require time for the team to settle in it and start banging goals.
But AW could try in pre-season the 4-4-2 although it will affect Cesc's form quite badly.

Re: Arsenal U21s & U18s Thread
It sad to see that we are so dependent on Cesc that our play has to revolve around him so much. I'm not taking anything away from him, he is the epitome of class and quality in the midfield. But its kind of sad to see this for me.
I remember the days vividly when the motto was "WIN TOGETHER". Whatever happen to that now? Now its like make Cesc really really comfortable and hope he stays injury-free and produces MoM display for us to get a win. And spend every summer under a constant fear of losing him. We are so dependent on one player! No wonder we are trophyless.

That I must agree but still facing a risk by changing our formation isn't exactly what you might call a perfect choice in our situation AW has pressure to deliver and he won't risk starting from all-over again.
But your point is one of the main reason I think we should bank in on Fab I mean clearly he isn't staying so why not sell him and mold our new team and formation as soon as possible?
