Re: Jack Ma's disappearance
What's even scarier is that they can't be stopped. They can kill whoever they want, put people in concentration camps, kill their own doctors for trying to alert the world about the coronavirus, exploit children and violate all sorts of human rights, and still nobody can stop them.
It's a sad truth but the CCP has made China untouchable, and even their own citizens can't say a word to criticize them. Otherwise, they disappear.

If someone disappears, you start to worry after 2 days, not after 2 months

I mean it's shocking that they can just disappear someone so powerful (if they did), but I'm with Hans.
Hard to feel super bad about this when you secretly wish billionaires would be guillotine'd.

How about we try just taxing them more... ?VivaStPauli wrote:I mean it's shocking that they can just disappear someone so powerful (if they did), but I'm with Hans.

IMO once you are worth 1B you should 'win' capitalism and get taxed 100% on any further net worth

Unless governments manage to find ways to stop rich people from easily moving their assets to offshore accounts by closing the many loopholes that currently exists, a 1% wealth tax would be more efficient than a high marginal income tax, the super rich don't earn much anyway and only consume a tiny fraction of their wealth.
Now i know the purpose of a wealth tax is to raise revenue but i’d argue that the point of the wealth tax is to disincentivize the accumulation of capital among the few, just like a high marginal tax rate is meant to disincentivize the accumulation of income among the few.

Re: Jack Ma's disappearance
All wealth taxes are really inefficient if we want to get technical. Wealth shouldn't be taxed at all (too complicated and subjective, drives people to tax havens, etc), income tax as you noted is not particularly efficient either as it's easy to get around and not necessarily reflective of a person's wealth.
The gold standard is a progressive consumption tax, this would actually tax the poor fairly and 'punish' the lavish lifestyle of the megarich. It also has the least amount of economic disincentives.
But anyways a debate for another thread.

I suppose the silver lining here is that if he's dead, he doesn't have to pay any more taxes.

Just saw the source, still the problem remains. He has to hide (stay low) while his company is being taken apart. I couldn't care less for Jack Ma, he is as bad as Jeff for me. The problem is investor confidence: would you invest in a company in a country where it can be taken apart by the gouvernment any time and its properties confiscated because the gouverning body is in a disagreement with the speech of the CEO of the said company?
This is what I meant with my first quote, Xi Jinping is making things worse for China.
To summarize what he got wrong up until now:
1. Taking away Hongkong's autonomy leading to banks and investors fleeing away. The mistake is really grave, for Hongkong was a hub for Chinese businessmen to find foreign investors.
2. Petty border clashes leading to alienating a 1.2 billion people market (India).
3. Hiding Wuhan virus up until hiding wasn't possible anymore and hindering WHO scientists at exploring the origins of the virus until today. Xenophobia would be the wrong word but as of now I think any private person in the world distrusts China the most and would like to avoid dealing with them as much as possible unless they economically have to.
4. The Uigur will bite China's a*** longterm. Those children and adults will grow up full of resentiments vs China even though they wouldn't show anything on the surface. As soon as the reign of CPP weakens expect shit to hit the fan from all directions.
5. That's more intern but corruption in China is at its peak as of now. Xi Jinping is letting his "party friends" to stay corrupt detrimental to China's real development.
