Re: Poland Protests
So PIS has the most votes, but doesn't have anyone to form the government with? And opposition will form it?

Yep, nobody wants to form a coalition with PIS.
The gov will most likely be centre-left. They have 248 votes which is FAR above a safe majority. The party with 18 seats isn't being considered
PIS will lose any vote of confidence by a very large margin.

Most votes =/= a majority of the votes

Yeah I dont know what that comment means either.
The 3 democratic opposition parties have already proclaimed before the election took place that they are ready to form the new government.
PIS received 35,38% of the vote which is the most of all parties, but they don't nearly have the majority in parliament and they have no ability to form a coalition with anyone because nobody wants anything to do with them and their criminal practices.
So, the implied and also verbally stated coalition of democratic parties received nearly 54% of the vote with another 7% from the smallest party who also mostly vote against PIS.
PIS would usually bribe and lure if they were a few seats short but as of today they are 37 seats short so they can't and won't lure anyone. If anything, the democratic opposition will try to lure away moderates from PIS because as they say rats always try to desert the sinking ship

Re: Poland Protests
I was surprised that it works that way. In Canada we have minority governments all the time.
Now in Poland you got the most popular party as powerless opposition, it does not strike me as the fairest system. But if PIS is so shit then i'm happy for you regardless.

Re: Poland Protests
I guess in theory it could happen but you need 231 votes. I don't know the custom in Canada but if someone from PIS is tasked with forming the government he will not receive 231 votes of support. Then the opposition will present their own candidate for prime minister, who is able to gather at least 231 votes of support.

Re: Poland Protests
That’s the way it works in all democratic countries including Canada and Spain.
I don’t mention the Us as republics (vs parliamentary governments) have a different system plus of course those who deny and ignore the will of the majority. How is it possible that one man can shut down congress or one man can stop all military promotions!

Re: Poland Protests
Poland's parliamentary elections were competitive but marked by misuse of public resources and public media bias, international observers say

I don't think PIS have enough guts to fully go the Lukashenka route, but those and the previous elections were not fair for sure

The opposition are not powerless, also this was not a surprise or a political scheme. The opposition parties had said they wanted to form a government against PIS, and the majority of the people voted for that government.
