Possible doomsday? Apophis 2029
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis
So, I stumbled on this. A pretty big asteroid 99942 Apophis is going to pass by earth at a distance of just over 30000 kms, which is btw closer than moon, on April 13 2029. Scientists been saying there wont be danger https://www.space.com/asteroid-apophis-2029-flyby-planetary-defense.html , but I was discussing with a geek friend of mine, and he said there’s actually 80% chance of it actually hitting the planet and well, ending the world. He is reasoning that on super high tidal forces that will arise on earth altering the asteroid’s rotational axis (something even Wikipedia is attesting, cant upload picture, so check the top wiki link)
NASA is dismissing everything because they don’t want the people to panic. Even Elon Musk has said we don’t have a defense against Apophis. https://www.livemint.com/science/news/a-monster-asteroid-will-hit-earth-and-we-ll-have-no-defence-elon-musk-1566313211740.html
So, anyone got anything on this? 10 years later, Friday the 13th is finally the end of everything? ) and pulling it closer. The thing has serious gravitational force apparently.

Re: Possible doomsday? Apophis 2029
I read it's more likely to hit Earth on its way back which will be in 2036. The distance in 2029 will be 38000 kms which is a lot but when the asteroid passes us Earth's gravitational force may affect its movement and it could come back 7 years later and get much much closer.
I'm pretty sure it won't be that difficult by then to use gravitational force to steer it out of its way.

Well I'm no scientist but 15 years is a lot to come up with a way to defend against a potential asteroid if the threat is actually real

That same wikipedia article cites numerous studies over the years putting the chances of it impacting earth at less than 0.001%

Yeah well, the scientists are saying the chances are virtually zero. The question is whether or not to believe it.

Hmm.
Anyway if as Myesyats pointed out that distance is too big for a possible change in orbit to cause damage, then ya might not be a cause for concern after all at least not until a few more years.

Another reason not to stop using fossil fuels tbh.
Who, if not oil platform drilling veterans, are we supposed to shoot up there in a rocket to land them on the asteroid to drill a hole in it in order to drop a nuke inside that hole?

That sounds like the premise for a porn flick

Great name! Wouldn’t worry about this particular one, but a big rock will hit Earth eventually & we currently have no defense. https://t.co/XhY8uoNNax

not in the next 10 years but eventually it'll be a threat according to Elon
he'll come up with a solution i'm sure of it, this is what he lives for

yeah, wouldn't mind it too, it's better for everyone to die altogether than to keep living and seeing people close to you die one after another

Re: Possible doomsday? Apophis 2029
Yeah well, heeh. I mean If there's set date like that for apocalypse/death, we can do whatever the fk we want without thinking much about the future. You know, we can actually live in the present and blast. Take big loans and not worrying about repaying them. The only problem is not many apart from us must know about this.

Ignoring all the other nonsense why would the impact be the end of the world?

The impact of an asteroid, if not immediately catastrophic, would most likely increase climate change towards cooling and first all photosyntetic organisms would die and then all other life on Earth.
An asteroid impact was the reason dinosaurs died out but fact of the matter is it needs to be a really big asteroid.
Its nothing new, Earth was hit by asteroids often throughout history which resulted in the oceans literally boiling for a full year resulting in many single cell organisms dying.
A decently sized one could result in temperatures rising to 500 degrees celcius for several weeks which means every large life form would die.

But this thread is not about asteroids in general but about 99942 Apophis and Glory wrote "[..].of it actually hitting the planet and well, ending the world."

Dont know the exact quantity required to blow up the world (or may be I do
https://gizmodo.com/how-many-nukes-would-it-take-to-blow-up-the-entire-plan-5899569 ) Lol but still this is pretty much God level threat.
If it does not end in one-shot, what @Myesyats said.
However, most worryingly, the impact would be equivalent to 880million tons of TNT being detonated – 65,000 times as powerful as the nuclear bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima
