Re: Wenger to step down
Jay29 wrote:The reports here reckon Wenger jumped before he was pushed. That basically the club were close to sacking him so he resigned, possibly thinking that it'd give the team a late push to win the EL as well.
If thats true then at least the club has finally come to that point and therefore Wenger were then forced to decide to leave. Thats a good sign for the club I guess and fair enough.

Re: Wenger to step down
A legend of the game.
A bit sad though because Tottenham are where they are partially due to Arsenal's decline. Arsenal get a good manager and it might be back to same old Spurs

Guillem Balague believes Luis Enrique would love to take the Arsenal job after Arsene Wenger announced he will depart in the summer.

Re: Wenger to step down
It was time, I guess. Nothing about Arsenal's current team suggests he was about to turn a corner and improve next season. That said, even though suffering in the league and Europe lately, Wenger still managed to win the FA cup in '14, '15 and '17, which is a great run in that competition. But now, the most intriguing thing about next season's Premier League will probably be how Arsenal do.

Re: Wenger to step down
Legend considered, he def should have stepped down last year. Saw lads on ArsenalFanTV saying this year was a wasted year and I fully agree, last summer they would have been in a better position to get a good replacement too. I doubt he wins EL but it would be a nice send off.

Should have left years ago. Should have definitely left last year and I guess now is a "good time". He'll always be a legend of the game, no one can take that away from him but he was surplus to Arsenal's requirements a long time now.

It's a joke really. Arsenal fans hailing him as a hero but he ruined your club. You would be as big as Man U if he left your club when he was supposed to.

The fact that most of you felt relief rather than anything else tells me I’m right too.
Really is the biggest joke that Wenger went from zero to hero for leaving. Even admitted he left because of the fans.

I gotta ask, what is your exact beef with Wenger guest7? Not even Arsenal fans (or Urban) is this focused on him being a surplus to requirements?

Best thing that happened to Arsenal was Wenger actually being there in the first place.

Since you are clearly not old enough to remember, read a bit of history regarding Wenger and Arsenal. Then you'll understand why Wenger is not only an Arsenal legend but a Premier League legend.
With that said, it's also the best thing that he is stepping down, that doesn't need explaining really.

To reconize one of the greatest achievements in the history of English football, the Premier League commissioned this gold replica of the Premier League trophy and presented it to Arsenal Football Club on August 22, 2004. The unbeaten seaon of 2003/2004 - part of the Gunners' top-flight record unbeaten run of 49 games - matched a feat achieved by Preston North End in 1888/1889. No other team has completed a league campaign without defeat. No other team can call themselves the Invincibles.

I highly doubt he's the right guy to steer PSG in the right direction in Europe. They have the talent already, they're just not mentally up for it.

He was great but has not been for some time now. It is good he is stepping down. Arsenal needs a fresh perspective. He will be missed of course, but he also has nothing more to give and also get back. Timely departure if you ask me.

No beef, I just like to expose frauds like the rest of GL
It's just amazing how people DON'T critisize him anymore (after the relief of him leaving) for over-staying and ruining Arsenal as a brand. They were on a high during the invincibles and could have kept going but Wenger was too stubborn to let go and it hurt them alot.
It doesn't matter if he got them there in the first place because he overstayed his welcome. He no longer is a hero, he is a fraud.

He's a legend but that doesnt mean he's immune to criticism. I wouldnt go as far as Guest but I partially agree.
Anyway, lets just forget about that. He's gone and we can finally end this chapter.

Re: Wenger to step down
We've literally criticised everything we could conceivably criticise about the guy and, in the end, got what we wanted. So I don't see any value in calling the guy a "fraud" and not appreciating what he's done for the club.
The guy is at his worst as a manager and has still managed to win more trophies than Tottenham, Liverpool and United recently.

Fraud is a special term reserved for certain key people, Wenger isn't one of them although he tries very hard to be
