Is Umtiti in current form the best CB in the world?

Mistakes can happen. And he may have been at fault for the penalty, but it still was just a friendly game with no real pressure. Umtiti is a stellar defender, certainly at the club level. I hope Romagnoli gets to that level (and it does seem like he could).

considering Umtiti is an upgrade over all our CB's that we pair with Bailly..

your posts are terrible. You should try to sign Jones and Smalling since we're discarding them and they're better than Matip and VVD.

Honestly, Umtiti has been kind of a disaster in these 2 NT games... he's been reckless and out of position.

Perhaps he is poorly instructed. I'd look for the source of the problem in the coaching department

Deschamps is an excellent defensive coach... that's what I don't like about him.  He's like Mourinho.

No...  Umtiti played like David Luiz in the past 2 games.  PK of course... and then made a stupid challenge at the center line that led to the Russia goal.  Got owned a couple of times too by being too aggressive.

Just not a good showing.  He's good though.  Just needs to understand that this isn't Spanish football.  It's far more direct so you can't get super aggressive like that.

Koscielny looked far better today.

That's because Koscielny is the best french CB despite being past it imo.

Koscielny is not past it. He's just had a slump.

It's against Russia though... Kos can do a job. He's just not what he used to be.

His body is finished. Slower. Weaker. Poor Stamina.

But he should still start at the WC though.

No way he starts. Varane/Umtiti if healthy. Kos doesn't have the speed to keep up with the really top forwards for a whole tournament. He's a GREAT one to have if you need a big game though. He can raise his game up for the occasion.

On form the best cb in the world is chiellini

Buddy I don't know who you think you are but this is GL. Balanced, well reasoned opinions have no place here. A player is either the best or deserves to be playing in the third tier, there is no middle ground and that's the way we like it.

Umtiti is a great player. So it Varane.

Defenders are stuck between a rock and hard place in these NT friendlies. They get criticized for not making plays... yet they can't play physical because it's a friendly.

It's a lose/lose situation.

I'm sure there's a happy medium to be reached, I really like him, potentially the best defender in Barcelona history. I just hope he doesn't ruin it and go full on mercenary.
