Here's what Ribéry did

In this hour I am reminded of how tragic it is that RWO is no longer with us, as I'm about to go and watch her beloved Schalke with their new kid coach face their nemesis BFC Dynamo Berlin in the cup

Not very probable, depending what you class as an upset.
There's quite a few BuLi vs BuLi duels so any result there is not an upset.
The only games of BuLi teams against opponents from much lower leagues are Dortmund und Schalke (against 3rd Bundesliga opponents) and Frankfurt against 4th division Schweinfurt.
Dortmund and Schalke won't lose, IMO, Frankfurt could but I don't think so.
The rest is BuLi vs 2nd BuLi
There the most likely true upset IMO will be Leverkusen losing against Union Berlin from 2nd BuLi. I'd like that very much.
Gladbach losing against Düsseldorf (a proper derby) is quite possible, as is Mainz against Kiel, those would be small upsets.
Stuttgart might very well lose against Kaiserslautern, but there's not much between the teams anyway so that's not an upset. Dresden is always good for a Pokal fight, but them kicking out Freiburg wouldn't be a huge story either.

Huh, I thought there's some sort of seeding which means top-tier teams draw lower-lever opponents.Hapless_Hans wrote:iftikhar wrote:WTFRB Leipzig - FC Bayern

Re: DFB-Pokal 2017/18
There isn't. Everyone can be drawn against anyone at any point.
The only stipulation is that 'amateur' teams (4th division and beyond) drawn against a top 3 division team will always get a home game.
In 15/16 too, we had to play Wolfsburg (then the reigning cup winners) in the 2nd round already.
Actually just today, because of the Leipzig Bayern draw, there was a discussion about introducing seeding but most people, including Hoeness publicly today, have come out against changes.

Re: DFB-Pokal 2017/18
Ok I looked it up and I wrote a number of wrong things in the above post.
First of all, the automatic home game is not amateur vs professionals, but any teams lower than BuLi against a BuLi team.
Then, in the first 2 rounds there's indeed seeding, i.e. two pots. I did not actually know that. You were right.
1. Round:
Pot 1: 18 Buli teams plus first 14 2nd Buli teams
Pot 2: The rest (last 4 of 2nd BuLi, first 4 of 3rd BuLi, 24 lower division teams inculding the local federation cup winners)
2nd round:
Pot 1: teams from 1st and 2nd BuLi
Pot 2 the rest
- as here, one pot might be bigger than the other, the remaining teams from one pot are drawn against each other.
Guess that is what happened this year, with all BuLi teams (except HSV) having advanced..
after this 2nd round, round of last 16 and further, no seeding or pots anymore

Re: DFB-Pokal 2017/18
Yes. Are coached by Keller, ex-Schalke coach (some may remember, he was that no name guy from the Schalke 2nd team that did quite well as far as Schalke go)
They've been upper table, close to promotion, in 2nd BuLi for a while now.
Well supported, from east Berlin (Hertha are west), arguably the no.1 club of Berliner people.
They cam very, very close to promotion last year though any fans are happy to have stayed in 2nd BuLi, no idea what renovations would have been necessary to the Alte Försterei stadium and some feared it might be bad for finances, and the fans' purse too.

It has to be said, while Leverkusen field more or less thier strongest 11, Union have played their B-team
Polter, their best striker, coming on now.

Upset possible.
Holstein Kiel are completely surprising and out of nowhere 2nd placed in 2. BuLi, as a newly promoted side.
I don't know anything about them but they seem to be flying.
What I do know is that never there has been a Bundesliga side from the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein though, and I doubt Kiel will hang on long enough to change that historical fact.

FT 4:1. Bayer scored a penalty, and a free kick by Aranguiz, in the last couple of minutes.
