DFB-Pokal 2016/17
The Rules:
Map of the 3rd Liga and amateur clubs:
Last 16:
08.02.2016
Borussia Dortmund vs Hertha BSC
Hamburger SV vs 1.FC Köln
Sportfreunde Lotte vs TSV 1860 München
SV Sandhausen vs FC Schalke 04
Hannover 96 vs Eintracht Frankfurt
FC Bayern München vs VfL Wolfsburg
SpVgg Greuther Fürth vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
FCA Walldorf vs Arminia Bielefeld
2nd Round:
1st Round:
The Rules:
- Spoiler:
- The 64 teams eligible for the 1st round of the DFB-Pokal are:
All Bundesliga clubs (18), all 2nd Bundesliga clubs (18), all Verbandspokal* Winners (21), the 1st to 4th placed teams of the 3rd Liga (4) and three extra clubs from the three largest Landesverbände (federal associations) Bayern, Westfalen and Niedersachsen.
In the first round of the DFB-Pokal, the professional teams (Bundesliga and 2. Liga) are put into one pot and the amateurs (plus the 4 worst placed 2nd Bundesliga teams) are put into the second pot.
The pairings thus are the amateurs (who always get home right) versus the Bundesliga teams. For the lower division teams (we even had a 7th division team last DFB-Pokal, IIRC) it is both a great honour to get one of the top Bundesliga clubs and they get quite some money out of it. The small teams always hope to get Bayern, Dortmund and the other attractive big teams as then they get a huge audience and of course they hope to become a "Pokalschreck" (literally "cup horror") who manage to eliminate the big guns.
*) The Verbandspokal is a cup where only the clubs of 3rd Liga and below are eligible.
A Verband (= "association") or Landesverband (= "federal association") is an organisation within a region in Germany in which the clubs are organised.
We have the following 21 Verbände: Baden, Bayern, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Mittelrhein, Niederrhein, Niedersachsen, Rheinland, Saarland, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Südbaden, Südwest, Thüringen, Westfalen, and Württemberg, each of them hosting a Pokal (=cup) of their own among the lower league clubs.
My team RWO - who are currently in the 4th division - belong to the Verband "Niederrhein" and thus fight for the "Niederrheinpokal", but unfortunately were eliminated in the semi final. This season, our fiercests rivals RWE got the cup
The Verbandspokal winners are usually 3rd Liga and down to 6th or 7th division clubs

Not every club has centuries of tradition.
But I have to admit, the first round of the DFB-Pokal is always fascinating as you hear of little villages that you never knew before XD

What is the population of Germany? 50-60 million i suppose
My question is not just for Germany but other European countries too, how come such small population has 40 professional teams? Nearly half the country is playing so who's watching it?

@Lucifer
Current population of Germany is 81.8 mio people. Almost 7 million people of that are organised in the DFB (German FA) which contains 25000 (!) football clubs of all sizes that field almost 162000 teams of all ages, men and women. By the way, more than 1 million members in the DFB are female, which explains why women football is pretty strong in Germany.

Re: DFB-Pokal 2016/17
German government has nothing to do with football (other that Angie and many ministers and other politicians are big fans, but people in general like football here a lot).
E.g. here's the minister president of Nordrhein-Westfalen, the federal state I live in:
The DFB ist a "non-profit registered association" (gemeinnütziger eingetragener Verein), so the revenue is supposed to go into the promotion of youth and similar stuff.

RWO was kicked out in he semi final of the Niederrheinpokal by the WSV. In the final, our fierce rivals RWE won the cup, which added insult to injury

Re: DFB-Pokal 2016/17
Exactly! And now RWE got Arminia Bielefeld in the first round, who are a manageable opponent. *snif* We should have been there, if not for those stupid guys losing their concentration two minutes in injury time and getting the equalizer which then led to a penalty shootout where we lost to the WSV. I'm sure we'd have shot RWE out of the stadium in the final as we defeated them without problems twice in the league.

Re: DFB-Pokal 2016/17
If I'm not wrong, the German athlete/population is highest in the world. I read an article some years ago. Also, Germans got serious after a dismal showing in a WC and invested heavily in their grass-root network which resulted in a plethora footballers (and clubs).rwo power wrote:@Lucifer

Re: DFB-Pokal 2016/17
The DFB is the world's largest sports association for a while already. The investments from 2000 on went mainly into elite sports academies, moreover, it was the football clubs that were made to invest in these as you need to have a DFB certified youth academy to get your license if you want to play in the Bundesliga or second BL.iftikhar wrote:Also, Germans got serious after a dismal showing in a WC and invested heavily in their grass-root network which resulted in a plethora footballers (and clubs).

Let the record show that in this, the first proper competitive game of FC Bayern under Carlo Ancelotti, David Alaba is playing as centre back and Philipp Lahm in central midfield.

Re: DFB-Pokal 2016/17
I hope things stay peaceful in Dresden as Dresden and Leipzig have a very strong enmity.
I will certainly watch the match of D/A against Gladbach. SV Drochtersen/Assel are a 4th division club from the Regionalliga Nord, but other than that I have no real clue about them.
Gladbach have to rest Yann Sommer whose injured ankle hurt aagain after the first leg of the CL play-off, but Tobias Sippel should be able to replace him well.
These are all matches that start the Saturday at 15:30 GMT+2:
SV Drochtersen/Assel vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
Würzburger Kickers vs Eintracht Braunschweig
SV Babelsberg 03 vs SC Freiburg
FC Viktoria Köln vs 1.FC Nürnberg
Rot-Weiss Essen vs Arminia Bielefeld
FC 08 Villingen [6th division] vs FC Schalke 04
Dynamo Dresden vs RB Leipzig
BFC Preußen [6th division] vs 1.FC Köln
Hallescher FC vs 1.FC Kaiserslautern
